Elizabeth Chambers Says She Supports Armie Hammer "Through His Journey" and "Always Will"

Elizabeth Chambers is ready to open up about her split from Armie Hammer. The couple announced their separation after 10 years of marriage in July 2020 following disturbing allegations that Hammer perpetrated violent abuse on women. In E!’s September 2022 cover story, the 40-year-old Bird Bakery founder discussed for the first time how their separation has affected her and how the two are maintaining a united front for the sake of their two kids, Harper, 8, and Ford Hammer, 6.

“Our divorce is not finalized. But we are in a really great place. We talk all the time,” Chambers said at the time. “We’re committed fully and wholly to our children, and to being together as much as possible in a non-romantic way for our kids. Kids need their mom; kids need their dad. So there’s nothing we won’t do.”

But, of course, it hasn’t been easy. Chambers admitted there have “definitely” been challenges along the way. She explained, “Armie has been focused on his healing. There’s the oxygen mask theory: You can’t really take care of someone until you are taken care of. There’s a reason on the plane they say, ‘Secure your own mask before helping others.’ He has been very busy securing his own mask. My mask has been secured, [the kids’] masks are on, so right now it’s really been a lot about focusing on them, protecting them.”

Even though Chambers and Hammer are no longer together, she’s there to support him throughout his healing process. “It’s going to make him the best father, the best person he can be,” she told E!. “At the end of the day, that’s the goal. We’re in constant communication and all that matters is that he is the best dad for our children. Obviously he processes everything else that he’s dealing with personally — and that’s his own journey now.”

Now, Chambers is further opening up about her separation from Hammer in a February 2023 conversation with Elle following her ex’s recent Air Mail interview. Though Chambers declined to talk to the publication about the interview, she revealed that she and Hammer saw psychotherapist and relationship specialist Esther Perel throughout most of their marriage. “[Esther] always said heartbreak is literally worse than a heroin addiction, and I think about that a lot,” Chambers said.

Chambers told Elle that their relationship hit rock bottom at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when Hammer decided to leave Chambers and her kids in the Caymans to help a friend restore a motel outside of Joshua Tree National Park in California. “He was the worst,” Chambers said of Hammer. “My heart was broken in nine million pieces, and I still drove him to the airport.”

She added: “You can give, you can love, you can be there for someone, but you also need to hold people accountable for their actions.” As of February 2023, the former couple’s divorce has not been finalized. “The dissolution of my family was literally my biggest fear of my whole life,” Chambers said. “You’re building something, right? You’re weaving a beautiful tapestry, and the last thing you want is for a knife to come and rip the tapestry in half.”

Today, Chambers is on a journey of self-healing and assisting others along the way. She told Elle, “The days of putting all your eggs in his basket and then being left holding nothing are gone. No, no. There are so many things you can do: Advocate for yourself. Learn. Start an Etsy, I don’t care. Start doing whatever it is that fulfills you.”

“You’re literally in this triage state after a car accident,” she explained. “Eventually you’re brought to the emergency room and hooked up to an IV — and when I say eventually, this isn’t in one day, this is weeks and then months — and then you start physical therapy. Every day is moving toward that ultimate goal of being able to walk again.”

Chambers and her kids are currently still living in the Cayman Islands and she previously told E! that she’s in “a committed relationship.” But for now, she’s just focused on moving forward. “I’ve become more grounded in being one with the earth and being vocal about what I want and what I don’t like,” she said to Elle. “How can you really let something go if you don’t verbalize it?”

“I support Armie through his journey and I always will,” Chambers concluded. “All I’ve ever wanted is for him to be sober, healthy, and happy. And he is that. He’s really present when he’s with the kids, and that’s all I can hope for. All you want is for your children to have two solid parents, right? That’s always the goal, so anything I can do to support that, I will.”
