Emmerdale star Liam Fox reveals his dad died from loneliness in heartbreaking comments

Emmerdale actor Liam Fox has shared the tragic news that his dad died as a result of loneliness.

The soap star, 52, opened up about the sad circumstances surrounding his father’s death as he appeared on Good Morning Britain on Thursday.

Liam, who plays Dan Spencer on Emmerdale, spoke about his late father as he discussed ITV’s One Million Minutes campaign, which aims to help those who feel isolated in the UK.

Liam’s father died aged 73 last February from pneumonia.

Liam said on GMB: “There are so many people living on their own now.

“My dad did and he suffered with it [loneliness]. Quite honestly, it killed him, his loneliness, by the end of it.

“Throughout his life he had been depressed, he turned to drink.”

Liam recalled going to see his dad amid his drink battle as he tried to convince him to live with him.

He continued: “You would go around to see him, and say come and live with us, but he didn’t want to come and live with you because he wanted to drink as well.

“So that vicious circle of loneliness and drink just went on and on and on. It’s one of those things.”

Speaking about his father’s passing last July, Liam said that his dad ultimately wasn’t able to overcome his alcohol addiction and it was “horrendous” seeing him suffer.

He told The Mirror: “It was absolutely horrendous for us to watch him get so regularly drunk knowing that one day he would die from the demon drink.

“Even though we repeatedly warned him if he didn’t stop drinking, he would die, he couldn’t help himself.”

Speaking further about his dad’s loneliness, Liam said he “would never leave his house” and it ended up being impossible to get his dad the help he desperately needed.

He continued: “It’s an area of mental health support that needs addressing. Surely dealing with the cause of the alcoholism is more important than the drinking itself?

“It was an absolute nightmare but I know we couldn’t have done any more.”

Liam added that he hopes by speaking out he can help others suffering from loneliness, like his dad did.

He said: “If me talking about what happened can help others, then that has to be a positive thing. Nobody should have to suffer in silence.”
