Gary Glitter being sent back to prison just a month after release from jail

Paedophile Gary Glitter has been recalled to prison following an alleged breach of his licence conditions.

The 78 year old, who had a string of chart hits in the 1970s, had been freed in February after being jailed in 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls. He left HMP The Verne – a low security category C jail in Portland, Dorset – following eight years behind bars, having served half of his 16-year sentence.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was subject to licence conditions on his release, including being closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and fitted with a GPS tag.

A Probation Service spokesperson said: "Protecting the public is our number one priority. That's why we set tough licence conditions and when offenders breach them, we don't hesitate to return them to custody."

The disgraced musician is understood to have been discovered attempting to access the Dark Web on his phone whilst staying at a bail hostel in Waterlooville, Hampshire.

Apparently, he was heard "asking how to avoid detection when web browsing" on a mobile phone – referring to 'The Onion' as his destination.

'The Onion' is a term for the infamous online realm known as the Dark Web, commonly utilised by paedophiles due to the system's complex tracing bypasses.

Glitter's latest arrest saw him hiding beneath a brown blanket as he was escorted away from the hostel in an unmarked police vehicle on Monday.

The Probation Service went on to confirm Glitter's recall, with a spokesperson commenting on his return to custody: 'Protecting the public is our number one priority".

On Sunday, ex-justice secretary Robert Buckland KC called for "swift action" after the freed sex offender was reportedly filmed discussing the sinister internet browser.

The leading Tory MP told The Daily Mail: "I would have thought there would be licence conditions prohibiting this sort of activity and I hope the Ministry of Justice takes swift action to deal with this."

Meanwhile, ex-home secretary Priti Patel also pointed out that the star's alleged breaching of conditions should see him in prison straight away.

"This is very shocking and makes you feel sick," the 50 year old politician added.

The Ministry of Justice explicitly states: "Sex offenders are closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and face some of the strictest licence conditions including restrictions on internet use.

"If an offender breaches these conditions, they can be recalled to prison."
