Gary Lineker, 62, married Welsh model Danielle Bux, 43, in 2009 after dating for two years prior. Seven “wonderful” years later, the couple shocked fans by announcing their divorce, with Gary sharing on Twitter that they “remain very close and the greatest of friends”.
The Match of the Day host has now revealed new details about their split, saying that it was a “logical” decision.
Appearing on Gabby Logan’s The Mid-Point podcast, Gary explained that their separation was “purely down to children”.
He said that they had not planned on having any because Danielle already had a daughter, Ella, now 20, and Gary had four older sons.
He shares George, Harry, Tobias and Angus with his first wife, Michelle Cockayne, 57.
However, Gary said Danielle’s “body clock started ticking” and she got the “urge” to have more children.
Although Gary told Danielle that they would have children, they ultimately decided to split up.
Gary said: “In the end, we decided to stay mates and see if she can find someone that really does want another child.
“That happened and he is a really good friend of mine now.

“I know it’s unusual, but it’s a lot better than falling out.”
Gabby probed him as to why he was reluctant to have another child, asking whether it was because he would have been an older dad.
Gary replied: “No it wasn’t, I would have done it anyway.
“But ultimately, she didn’t want for me to do something that I didn’t really want deep down, and I didn’t want to stop her from doing something that she really wanted deep down.

“We just came to a logical, sensible relationship and it has worked, it’s great. We don’t argue anymore either!”
Danielle went on to marry American entertainment lawyer Nate Greenwald in 2019 after they welcomed a daughter, Romy Wren, around one year earlier.
Gary has not married again and says he is quite content being single.
He told the Daily Star last year: “I’m happy being single now. It’s nice to be unanswerable in a slightly selfish way and I’m not actively seeking a partner right now.
“I had two wonderful marriages and now I’m single and I’m in a good place, but that might change.
“I might need someone to change my nappies. Who knows?”
