Gemma Atkinson reveals she nearly died while giving birth after losing ‘pints’ of blood

Actress Gemma Atkinson has revealed that she nearly died while giving birth after losing a lot of blood.

She also admitted that her Strictly professional dancing star fiance Gorka Marquez was in tears as doctors fought to keep her alive.

This was during the birth of her first child back in 2019 as her daughter, Mia's, heart rate suddenly dropped which plunged Gemma into an emergency caesarean.

Gemma, 38, has opened up about the traumatic experience of her firstborn child as she had to re-live it all as she welcomed her baby boy Thiago last month.

Speaking to MailOnline, Gemma said: "My first birth was a traumatic one. They gave me a form about blood transfusions that asked if one of us had to be saved, which one would it be.

"It could have gone very differently. Immediately afterwards you think to yourself, 'Gosh, would I go through that again?' Then you look at your child and think, 'I'd do it all again tomorrow.' That's the nature of motherhood."

A new documentary is set to tell the story of Gemma's pregnancy struggles as she went through her second birth.

Gemma And Gorka: Life Behind The Lens aims to raise awareness for many of the struggles that women can face when giving birth as it highlights all the difficulties Gemma had to go through.

Following the birth of her son Thiago, Gemma has been keeping fans updated with how things are going and took to social media to share: "Little man is here. He arrived safe and sound and he’s utterly wonderful. Mia is already the mother hen we expected her to be.

"We’re all home together soaking up this lovely little bubble before Gorks has to leave for Strictly rehearsals next week.

"Thank you for all your lovely well wishes. Our family is complete."

In the comments, many fans shared their love for the family as one person wrote: "Love the name Thiago."

While another said: "Oh the most beautiful one."

A third penned: "Omg he looks so much like Mia. Perfect little boy. Congratulations guys."

The loved-up couple first met when Gemma participated in the 2017 series of the hit show Strictly Come Dancing which sees celebrities paired with professional dancers in a bid to win the coveted trophy.

Despite not being paired together on the show, it is clear there was a blossoming romance behind the scenes as the pair have been together since.
