Friends star Matthew Perry dies aged 54

Just days after the shocking death of Matthew Perry, a 2004 interview where Jennifer Aniston breaks down over the “idea of losing” her Friends co-star has resurfaced.

Matthew, who died at his home in Los Angeles from an apparent drowning in his hot tub, had been very open about his struggles with addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Now, Jennifer’s 2004 interview with Diane Sawyer has been all over social media as fans continue to try and wrap their heads around his death.

Jennifer broke down in tears as she discussed her friend and co-star’s “rough road”, years before his sudden death.

Diane asked the actress what each of her Friends co-stars needed to hear. When it came to Matthew, she visibly struggled to find the right words.

She told Diana that Matthew needed to know that he would be “alright”, then admitted that she and her co-stars were not “equipped” to handle the situation.

“We didn’t know. We, you know, we weren’t equipped, we weren’t – to deal with it. You know, nobody had ever dealt with that and, you know, the idea of even losing him,” she said between tears.

“He’s having a rough road, but he is alright.,” she continued.

Matthew himself also told Diane in a separate interview about a four-word warning during a break from filming Friends.

“We know you’re drinking,” Matthew said Jennifer told him.

“Yeah, imagine how scary a moment that was,” Matthew confessed about his co-star confronting him.

“I should have been the toast of the town, but I was in a dark room meeting with nothing but drug dealers and completely alone,’ he added, in a reference to his addiction struggles.

In his revealing 2002 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew was completely candid about his addictions.

“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead,” he wrote in the opening.

“People would be surprised to know that I have mostly been sober since 2001. Save for about sixty or seventy little mishaps over the years,” he revealed.

Matthew’s exact cause of death is pending a toxicology report the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office revealed the day following his death.
