I’m a Celebrity’s Paul Burrell’s update on gruelling cancer treatment

Paul Burrell celebrates end of radiotherapy for prostate cancer

I’m A Celebrity’s Paul Burrell urged men to get checked, as he celebrated from the scene of the Christie-Macclesfield District General Hospital that a nightmarish round of radiotherapy was finally over.

The former butler to Princess Diana turned reality star seemed to be in much brighter spirits than previous days as he rejoiced that he was going home.

He posted a photo of a bell at the hospital alongside the words: “Ring this bell three times well, its toll to clearly say my treatment’s done, this course is run and I am on my way!”

In his caption, the relieved star wrote: “The radiotherapy treatment for my prostate cancer is now complete….onwards and upwards!

“I cannot thank the staff at The Christie enough. Their support throughout the process has been absolutely incredible.”

He added insistently: “Men over 50, please ask your GP for a PSA test!”

The blood test assesses levels of prostate-specific antigens and, while a negative reading is not guaranteed to be 100 percent accurate, it can help give an indication of whether someone might be suffering from prostate cancer.

The Cancer Research UK website suggests that survival rates for this type of cancer are generally good, but that it’s crucial to get it caught as quickly as possible to maximise the chances of living a normal lifespan.

Paul’s test came back with an unusually high reading, so the star went for an MRI scan, which revealed he had a shadow on his prostate gland – but as soon as he found out, his road to recovery could begin.

Celebrities including Dan Wootton took to Instagram to congratulate Paul on successfully finishing the gruelling, and often intimidating, course of radiation.

Meanwhile, fans chimed in with their own good luck wishes, with one exclaiming: “Thank you for sharing your journey, men really have to be more proactive in their healthcare too. I’m praying you are safe from this bad disease and now the healing begins.”

Another praised: “S*** dude. You’re already ringing the bell. Big congrats. So happy to hear that.”

Last week, he told Lorraine Kelly in scenes filmed for her ITV show that he was looking forward to “getting to the end” of the treatment so that he and his husband Graham could take a break away together.

“We can just be thankful that it’s been found!” the former footman for the late Queen Elizabeth II, who also participated in I’m A Celebrity in 2004, exclaimed.

“In a few months’ time, I’ll find out whether it’s clear or not, and then I get on with the rest of my life,” he declared, adding: “There’s a lot to live for!”
