Jada Pinkett Smith Gets Emotional After Her Mom Says This During Addiction Red Table Talk

As comedian Tommy Davidson opens up about his addiction battle, he also credits Gam with saving his life.

Tommy Davidson was the special guest on Monday’s new episode of "Red Table Talk" on Facebook Watch, but the conversation led to an emotional moment between Jada Pinkett Smith and her mother as the group spoke openly about drug addiction.

The comedian said his battle with substance abuse was "really, really bad," explaining that he "lost a marriage" and relationship with his children because of it.

Davidson said director Spike Lee, Jada and her own mother, Adrienne Banfield Norris, were all there to support him when he needed it most.

"You say mom saved your life," recalled Jada, "I called you and said, ‘What the hell’s going on with you?’"

She said she then gave the phone to her mother, a recovering addict herself. "I just came in with reinforcement," said Gam. "By that time you had already been exposed to the program."

"I had been, but it’s a process, it’s something that had to take its hold," said Davidson. "I just want to thank you, that saved my life and that was one of the many things that happened that are the reason why I’m here."

When Jada asked if he’s still working to repair his relationship with his children, Tommy said he was and that it’s up to him to not apologize for his actions in the past, "but to atone." Gam then said the journey for her and Jada is ongoing.

"What has been really painful for me in our journey, is to see Jada’s relationship with her children and realize all that she missed with me," she said, as Jada began tearing up next to her. "That has been extremely, extremely painful for me. I’m happy for it and I’m so proud of her … and the loss is just as much mine as it is yours. It’s difficult."

"I hope for you that there will be an opening in some way to really have a deep healing with your kids," said a choked up Jada to Tommy. Added Gam, "I think we still struggle. It’s such a process and I don’t think it, unfortunately, ever ends."

The episode ended on a happy note, however, as Davidson was surprised by his sister Beryle. While the two speak every day, they hadn’t seen each other in person for over a year. It was another emotional moment, as she said how proud she was of her brother for what he’s overcome.

New episodes of "Red Table Talk" drop Mondays on Facebook Watch.
