Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy and Spike kiss
Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans were thrilled in January when Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular Buffy, reunited with co-star James Marsters who played bad boy vampire Spike, 20 years after the final episode of the show aired.
Both stars attended the premiere of Sarah’s most recent show, Wolf Pack, and posed happily together on the red carpet.
However, behind the smiles, James has revealed that he had completely misread the situation believing that Sarah herself had invited him.
Speaking at Dublin Comic Con he recalled getting the invite and thinking, “Oh, Sarah… Sarah wants me to come support that. Okay, I’ll go.”
After he RSVPd, he thanked the person who manages his emails for sending it on only to learn that it hadn’t come from his former co-star as he believed.

“I called my friend and was like, ‘Thanks for sending me Sarah’s invite’,” he remembered.
“He’s like, ‘Oh, no, that’s not Sarah. You get these all the time. You got more last week. It was the Chippendale movie, but I didn’t think you wanted that one. But this one I sent you.’”
By now he was already committed to attending so he had no choice but to sheepishly show up.
“Sarah had no idea I was coming,” he recollected, “and I was like, ‘I’m just going. It sucks!’
“So I went to the [event] coordinator. I was like, I don’t know if you guys want me on the red carpet, but I’m here. If you don’t want me, I’ll just go inside,” he admitted.

However, they were thrilled to see him telling him that they did indeed want him on the carpet.
“Freddie [Prinze Jr] and Sarah just happened to show up right as we were about to go on the red carpet,” he said. “I was like, ‘You want to walk, you want to get some pictures?’ Hell yeah. It kind of blew up,” he laughed.
Sarah and James’ characters had something of a love triangle on the show as she enjoyed a dalliance with both him and another vampire Angel (David Boreanaz).
This made the pair’s reunion all the more exciting for fans who have been divided about whether or not they should have ended up together. Sarah Michelle Gellar put the debate to bed at the show’s 20th anniversary celebrations, though.
Speaking to EW she said: “There was something so beautiful to me about the Buffy and Angel story. I think that Spike understood a different part of who Buffy was and I think she needed to understand that and discover. But for me as Buffy, I think Angel.”
