‘Hurting is an understatement’ – devastated Lionesses speak out after World Cup defeat

Millie Bright and Keira Walsh have both opened up about their devastation, days after the Lionesses were beaten by Spain in a nail-biting World Cup Final.

England’s team went head to head with the Spanish on 20 August, but after Spain scored an early goal in the first half, they weren’t able to equalize.

Despite extra time being added, the Lionesses couldn’t catch a break and finished second in the tournament after a staggeringly successful run.

Although they’re still being heralded for their success as the first England squad to make the final since 1966, the team have admitted they’re heartbroken by the final result.

Captain Millie Bright, who plays as a defender, took to her Instagram to explain how she feels now.

The 30 year old wrote: “Hurting is an understatement. Don’t have many words right now other than thank you to every single fan that supported us, your love + support is phenomenal.

Extremely honoured to be apart of such a special group of players + staff. The journey continues.”

Millie, who plays for Chelsea when she’s not representing England, also shared a picture from the World Cup which showed her defiantly punching the air as she promised the team would press on.

She’s not the only one openly feeling low, as midfielder Keira Walsh also took to social media to share her thoughts.

Keira, 26, shared a snap of herself and some of her teammates looking totally glum while accepting their silver medals after the match.

In the caption, she wrote: “Still hurting and will for a while but with that being said couldn’t be prouder of our journey and to be a part of this team.”

The star player added “a massive thank you to our fans for supporting us throughout the tournament even when we fell short at the final hurdle and to australia for being incredible hosts.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup was jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia, with the final taking place in Sydney.

Fans in Keira’s comment section rushed to reassure her that the Lionesses are still heroes in the eyes of the public.

“What you have done for girls, not only in the UK but all around the world is incredible. Chins up Lionesses we love you,” one commenter said, with another adding: “you guys have so much to be proud of, reaching the World Cup final is a massive achievement in and of itself. Turn that hurt into hunger and let’s go all the way in 2027.”

Celebs and politicians have also been among those paying tribute to the Lionesses after their heartbreaking defeat, with FA President Prince William among those reassuring the players that they’ve “done us proud.”
