John Whaite admits seeking revenge on Lorraine Kelly after ‘bitter’ show axe

Strictly: John Whaite predicts Angela Rippon success

John Whaite admitted he wanted to seek out revenge on Lorraine Kelly by sewing prawns into her curtains.

The Bake Off star spoke candidly on the presenter’s show today about being axed from the programme.

Speaking to stand-in host Christine Lampard, he said: “When you are at those dizzying heights of excitement, of being with people you really like working with, of external validation, we are all quite vulnerable people. There’s this massive crashing low.

“I speak very honestly about life after Bake Off and how that made me quite bitter. I used to work for Lorraine and when that came to an end I was so bitter about it.

“I wanted to sneak into Lorraine’s house and sew prawns into her curtains!”

He added: “I thought it was personal. But I realise now that it’s not, it’s just the way of the world, it’s the way of the industry.”

The cook and food writer, who won Bake Off in 2012, went on to be resident chef on Lorraine but in 2017 his contract was terminated.

John has been open about his mental health and also expressed a “feeling of emptiness” once his time on Strictly came to an end in 2021.

He added: “After Strictly, I started to have this feeling of emptiness and I started to self-destruct.

“I drank too much, I almost ruined my relationship with Paul and luckily, because I’m in a relationship with Paul now for 15 years where we pride ourselves with honesty and communication and accepting that we don’t own each other, we live alongside each other and we’re so lucky to do so.”
