Julia Bradburys odd nightly ritual to improve health after breast cancer battle

Julia Bradbury Talks About How Cancer Was A Wake Up Call

Former Countryfile presenter Julia Bradbury has shared the ritual she swears by to improve her nasal breathing.

The 53-year-old revealed she has been sleeping with a “tiny thin tape” across her mouth, which helps her to breathe through her nose.

Julia says breathing too fast and out of our mouths is “not good” for our health, as she discussed her technique on BBC Radio Wales this week.

She spilled: “We all breathe too fast and we tend to breathe through our mouths, and that’s not good for our health.

“The best thing you can do for your health is to learn how to breathe through your nose and some people will go, ‘I can’t breathe through my nose, It’s blocked’.

“There’s a nose-blocking exercise which helps you with that, the more you sleep-breathe through your nose, the better you get at it.”

Julia added: “It’s just a little tiny bit of tape that goes from underneath my nose to underneath my bottom lip. And it just means it promotes my nasal breathing during the night.”

The presenter went on to urge anyone who feels nervous about the method to practise during the day, such as when sitting on a laptop.

According to Healthline, it’s healthier to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth as it helps your body effectively use the air you inhale.

It’s estimated that about 30 to 50 percent of adults breathe through their mouth, especially earlier in the day.

With this, the website added, it could potentially lead to health issues like bad breath and dry mouth.

Health experts have mixed views about the mouth-taping method, which went viral on TikTok earlier this year, but anyone with concerns should consult their doctor.

Julia’s admission comes after she discussed her new mindset after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021.

The presenter later underwent a single mastectomy to have a 6cm tumour removed and has since overhauled her lifestyle.

Speaking in Prima’s October issue, she said: “There’s no question that a cancer diagnosis changes your life. It doesn’t define you, but it shapes you,” she said of her diagnosis.

“It might sound like a weird thing to say, but I’m actually grateful for my diagnosis because it made me re-examine my life.”

Some of the ways she altered were cutting out alcohol and only eating during 10am to 6pm.

She spilled: “I have a really healthy diet, full of vegetables, fats and protein. What I don’t do any more is have buckets of ice cream and chocolate brownies.

“I’ve also cut out booze, as alcohol can increase the risk of recurrence, and I’ve probably done enough drinking in my life.

“The question is, ‘Do I want that feeling again, or do I want to stay alive?’”
