It’s been revealed that the children of actress June Brown will make a special appearance at Dot’s funeral, which airs on Monday 12 December.
June died aged 95 on 3 April, and her iconic EastEnders character Dot passed away on the BBC soap this week. June last appeared on EastEnders in January 2020.
Loved ones of Dot from past and present are set to appear at her funeral next Monday, as they say their goodbyes to the character and the actors bid farewell to the star who played her, in what will no doubt be heavily emotional scenes.
Among the guests at the funeral will be June’s children, executive producer Chris Clenshaw confirmed at a screening event for the special 40-minute episode.
After being contacted regarding the episodes surrounding Dot’s death, June’s children asked if they could attend her funeral, so they could say their own goodbyes to their mother’s widely-loved character.
Speaking about their upcoming appearance, Chris told RadioTimes.com: “We knew that we couldn't put it off for much longer, and as we started to discuss the episodes we of course spoke to June's family, who also knew that this is what their mother would have wanted.
"In fact, June's children, Nim, Sophie and Billy, knew how much EastEnders meant to their mother, so much that they requested to attend Doc's funeral to say their goodbyes, which was absolutely lovely for all of those involved.
"You know, stories were shared throughout the day, which was just gorgeous."
The trio will be seen for a brief moment on Monday’s episode sat on the same row as Dot’s great-nephew Reiss Colwell (played by Jonny Freeman).
Despite the sad circumstances, Chris described the day of filming the funeral as “wonderful”, as the cast and June’s children gathered to celebrate the star and her legacy on the soap.
The producer continued: "They approached us and asked if they could be part of the episode, and we thought it was a lovely idea."
“It was a kind of wonderful day, as we were reminiscing and sharing stories about June, which I think they thought was just lovely. So, it was a really nice time."
Viewers will also be able to see old faces return for Dot’s funeral next week, as Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), Mary Smith (Linda Davidson), Lofty Holloway (Tom Watt), and Barry Clark (Gary Hailes), are among those coming back.
