Rapper Kanye West, President Donald Trump’s celebrity friend, has announced that he is distancing himself from politics.
The surprise decision came in the wake of his name being misused in a campaign that encourages black Americans to quit the Democratic party.
Conservative commentator Candace Owens, who runs the campaign known as Blexit, earlier this week claimed that West had designed clothing for the movement.
But in a twitter message he denied it.
“I introduced Candace to the person who made the logo and they didn’t want their name on it so she used mine. I never wanted any association with Blexit. I have nothing to do with it”.
“My eyes are now wide open. I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative,” the singer tweeted.
In a series of posts on the social media Tuesday, the 49-year old rapper shared with his 28.7 million followers his stand on various important national issues in which the Trump administration came under fire.
“I support those who risk their lives to serve and protect us and I support holding people who misuse their power accountable.”
“I believe in love and compassion for people seeking asylum and parents who are fighting to protect their children from violence and war”.
“I support creating jobs and opportunities for people who need them the most, I support prison reform, I support common-sense gun laws that will make our world safer”.
Kanye West has been very friendly with President Donald Trump, and has faced backlash over his vocal support of the president.
West came under attack over a politically-charged speech he delivered in support of the President at the end of his September 29 appearance on Saturday Night Live premiere.
After playing “I Love It” on the comedy show, he sang “Ghost Town from Ye” wearing a red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap.
West’s performance evoked appreciation from Trump.
Singer Lana Del Rey described West’s endorsement of Trump as “a loss for the culture.”
A few days later, the President hosted West at the Oval Office for a working lunch to discuss criminal justice system and prison reform.
Earlier this year, West’s wife Kim Kardashian had met with Trump at the White House and successfully secured a presidential pardon for a woman who was serving a life sentence in prison over non-violent drug charges.
