English actress Kate Winslet celebrates her 47th birthday on October 5, and is currently worth roughly $65million (£56million) after almost three decades in film. The star jumpstarted her fortune with the role of a lifetime on Titanic, which was dubbed the most expensive movie of all time in 1997 when she was just 20 years old.

Winslet became a household name with her 1997 breakthrough on the big budget set of the infamous shipwreck alongside superstar Leonardo DiCaprio.

Although DiCaprio was just one year older than Winslet, he had started in cinema as a child actor almost a decade earlier.

He’d received critical acclaim for his heartwrenching work in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993 and starred in the 1996 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

By the time he was cast in Titanic, DiCaprio was a bona fide film star, whereas Winslet had only appeared in five films after getting her Hollywood breakthrough in 1994’s Heavenly Creatures.

With a lot more Hollywood influence to throw around, DiCaprio got roughly $500,000 (£438,000) more in his base salary for Titanic than Winslet did.

DiCaprio is believed to have earned $2.5million (£2.1million), while Winslet took home just $2million (£1.7million), but the actor had also negotiated a 1.8 percent share in the income Titanic earned.

The sensational film grossed over $2.2billion (£1.9billion) worldwide, with The Things estimating the Wolf of Wall Street actor actually took home closer to $45million (£39million).

DiCaprio’s real income earned him a place on the list of highest paid actors for a single production, tied with Robert Downey Jr for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Although she was not the highest-paid cast member, Titanic catapulted both Winslet and singer Celine Dion into international stardom.

In the 25 years since her time on Titanic, Winslet has proved herself to be a versatile actress with roles in documentaries, short films and a fair amount of voice acting to add to her repertoire.

In 2014 the actress made her mark on the villainous side of Hollywood with her role as Jeanine Matthews in the Divergent trilogy, a role she reportedly took because she wanted her children to think she was “cool”.

Winslet is on-screen for just 20 minutes in the first film, but earned a comfortable $5million (£4.3million), putting her Titanic salary to shame.

At the time, the production of Titanic was absolutely groundbreaking, with a budget of $200million (£175million) it was the most expensive movie ever made until 2010 when the same director, James Cameron, stole the title from himself with the CGI-laden Avatar.

Avatar also snatched Titanic’s rank of highest grossing film ever made as it earned $2.9billion (£2.5billion).

However, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides currently holds the record for most expensive production as it cost $378.5million (£331million).

Cameron doesn’t appear to want this title back as the long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water which also stars Winslet, has a budget of $250million (£219million).

Despite it being the film that made her, Winslet declared in 2012 interview with CNN that she can’t bear to watch Titanic at all.

She shared: “I’m like, ‘Ugh, really? Really? You did it like that? Oh my god. And even my American accent, I look at it and I’m like, ‘Ugh, I can’t even listen to myself.’ It’s awful, hopefully it’s so much better now.”

After her success in 1997, Winslet purchased her very own home in Angarrack, Cornwall for £200,000 according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Her Titanic earnings also prompted the start of a successful real estate investment portfolio too as she sold the Cornish property for £250,000 just three years later.

She frequented the English countryside for her property purchases, but was reportedly forced out of one £2million home in Treyford after an irreconcilable argument with her neighbours.

It is believed that her current UK home is a £4million West Sussex property that she has extensively renovated to include a swimming pool and media room.

Winslet’s investments extend across the ocean, where she reportedly owned a $5million (£4.3million) New York City penthouse which she rented out for $30,000 (£26,000) per month when she was not using it.

This property was sold in early 2021 for a staggering $5.69million (£4.9million).
