Katie Holmes shocks internet with very 00’s red carpet look – but stylist defends it

Actress Katie Holmes left the internet shocked on Friday December 9 when she walked the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball red carpet in a look rather reminiscent of the noughties' jeans and dress trend.

The Dawson's Creek star, 43, donned what appeared to be a short blue dress, although was later clarified to be a top by her stylist, which she wore over some wide legged jeans.

Finishing off the Y2K look she matched these with a pair of black trainers.

Within hours of the event, social media users had begun discussing the look, and before long even Katie's stylist had joined the conversation.

Taking to Twitter, one fan who rather disliked the look, posted: "Please for the love of goddess keep this era of fashion in the archives. Love Katie Holmes… but I detest this cursed red carpet era. idc idc idc."

While others were quick to defend the star's look, with one adding: "Katie Holmes shocking everyone with a mini dress, bootcut jean and a new balance sneaker…she kinda ate down ngl."

And while the red carpet look may have proved somewhat controversial, Katie's personal stylist Brie Welch has since defended the ensemble.

Talking to The New York Times Brie revealed that the outfit was a collaboration of both her own styling and Katie's personal taste.

She said: "We decided the rich colour and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans, creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there.

"On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!)"

Further defending her pal and client, Brie added that the Batman Begins star is "more than capable of looking cool in an unintentional trend 20 years later."

Earlier this year Katie looked loved-up and she appeared for the first time with new boyfriend Bobby Wooten III, who is a self-taught composer, producer and an instrumentalist.

The pair are said to have met through mutual friends, with a source close the couple telling E! News: "They know some of the same people who connected them and so far, it's working well.

"Katie is excited about seeing someone and is very happy. It's new, but it's going well. She enjoys having someone in her life and he is very kind and good to her."
