Ken Bruce disappointed he was asked to step down from Radio 2

Ken Bruce opens up about move & did ‘everything at the BBC’

Ken Bruce admitted his “disappointment” over the way BBC dealt with his exit but the host politely left the show without calling out the broadcaster.

He has now claimed that his decades of diligent service for the BBC made him an “afterthought” for bosses and believed he was taken for granted.

The 72-year-old opened up in a new interview as he takes his skills behind the microphone to rival station Greatest Hits Radio.

“I’m a little bit disappointed by that, I have to say,” he told Radio Times. “Because I thought that, after 45 years, I could be trusted to do the right thing for the next few weeks.”

Ken added: “But obviously it’s up to them. It’s their choice.”

Concerns were raised during Bruce’s last three weeks of employment and the radio presenter was placed on gardening leave.

The legendary radio broadcaster announced in January that he would be leaving the BBC after broadcasting for Radio 2 since 1984.

Bruce then confirmed he was joining Greatest Hits Radio and bringing the popular Popmaster segment with him.

Vernon Kay will be taking over Bruce’s slot on Radio 2.

Meanwhile, his first radio appearance since March 3 was praised by listeners.

One tweeted: “Listening to @RealKenBruce’s first link… it’s like he’s never been away! Legendary broadcaster at the station where musical legends live on… what a way to start the first week of April!”

Another commented: “The world is back to normal #KenBruce back on the radio and #popmaster back!”

A third penned: “Ken Bruce playing Let’s Stick Together as the final song before he introduces the quiz that’s scored him a legion of loyal listeners on a new station.

“Very good. Won’t lie, it’s gonna take some getting used to without the usual jingles etc. Feels like a different beast!”

A fourth wrote: “#kenbruce ended Radio2 with the Beatles & starts his new show with the same. Timeless brilliance from the master DJ.”

Another added: “Was a great show today. Enjoy popmaster! Would love to know the listening stats for Ken Bruce.”
