Kylie Cantrall Teases Upcoming New Movie Descendants: The Rise of Red

Kylie Cantrall is dishing on her upcoming movie musical Descendants: The Rise of Red!

The 18-year-old actress and singer opened up earlier this summer about the new film, where she stars as the titular character Red.

Red is described as “the rebellious 16-year-old daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora). Red knows she’ll never get the Queen’s approval, so she finds ways to provoke her mother and stir up trouble.”

In the music and dance movie, polar opposites Red and Chloe cross paths at a momentous celebration in Auradon when unexpected chaos breaks out. In order to prevent an impending coup, they must join forces to travel back in time, via a magical pocket watch created by the Mad Hatter’s son, to stop an event that would lead to grave consequences.

A few weeks ago, Kylie shared what it was like after getting cast, how her character compares to Mal and Evie from the original trilogy and how she reacted to Rita Ora being cast as her mom.

Check out what she said inside…

“We wrapped the movie in March, so it’s killing me knowing how many amazing songs, dance numbers, fight scenes, stunts, and so on are coming soon,” she told Hollywood Life. “I can’t wait for a whole new generation to say, ‘I grew up on Descendants.’ I guess it means so much to me because I was one of those kids saying that just a few years ago.”

“I think the fans of the other Descendants movies will be so happy that the overall vibe has stayed true to the franchise, but the writers definitely wanted to find a new voice for the character Red,” she teased about the differences between Mal and Evie and her character Red. “We get to see a character who is struggling with trying to find her own independence and breaking free from her mom’s [the Queen of Hearts] evil clutches. Red is tired of being told how to live her life and realizes she has problems with building friendships because she doesn’t trust people. I think this relates to so many young people who are trying to figure out where they fit in and, in the end, it’s the relationships she forms that give her life so much love and meaning. Red teaches us all that you have to trust that there is a better life out for us all out there.”

How did she react to Rita being cast as her mom, the Queen of Hearts?

“I was in literal disbelief,” Kylie shared. “I was actually obsessed with Rita’s song ‘Black Widow’ [with Iggy Azalea] when I was a kid, so that was actually one of the first thoughts that came to my mind when I found out she was going to play my mom.”

While Kylie said they never got to sing that song together on set, she would still like to do a duet at some point.
