Lee Mead reveals he had second secret hair transplant for confidence and personal reasons

Denise Van Outen's ex Lee Mead said on Friday's episode of This Morning that he had a second secret transplant for confidence and personal reasons.

Chatting to Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary on Friday morning (February 3), the former Holby City actor appeared on the ITV1 show and shocked viewers with his new look.

He sat on the sofa and spoke about how he recently shaved off his famous curly hair to undergo a hair transplant in Turkey.

Lee told the hosts how he recently went to a hair transplant clinic located in Istanbul to get his hairline brought forward for "personal" reasons.

Alison asked if this transplant was done for a personal reason, for his own well-being, to which Lee replied: "Absolutely, I've always said there's nothing wrong with being bald at all, but it's a very individual, personal thing if you want to be bald or not.

"For me, I had this great hair, but I was receding underneath and it affected my confidence a little bit.

He explained: "So the most recent operation I thought, 'Alright I need to take the leap,' and what did it for me was, Robbie Williams was on Zoe Ball's show on Radio 2 and said that he wanted to get a transplant recently, but he left it so long, his hair got so thin that he can't have the operation. So it's better to get it done sooner rather than later."

The clinic offers "micro surgery" to anyone between the ages of 18 and 60 "who have experienced hair loss for any cause".

Fans were taken aback by his new look, with one taking to Twitter to say: "He looks unrecognisable without his gorgeous curls."

"Impostor! He can’t possibly be Lee Mead! Where’s his curls?!" asked another baffled viewer.

"He doesn’t look like Lee Mead lol," penned a third.

While a fourth said: "He suits it either way."

"You look lovely like this," said Alison, before asking him if he's be growing his curls back.

Lee then explained how his partner likes his hair like it is now and thinks it's "quite sexy".

Talking about his transplant to BBC Essex, Lee said the treatment in Turkey was "three times cheaper than in the UK".

A hair transplant in the UK can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £30,000 – according to the NHS – depending on the extent of hair loss, the type of procedure and the clinic that carries it out.

The former Holby City actor said he had been hiding his receding hairline behind his curly hair for several years.

"I hide it really well but my crown was receding quite a lot and the centre top part of my head," he said.

"When they shaved my head for the operation I didn't realise I was actually losing a lot more hair than I thought. I did have a large mop of hair that covered those areas."

It came after Lee was seen arriving at London Gatwick from Istanbul, Turkey, where he underwent the transplant.

Lee previously shared a video as he gave fans an update before heading home to the UK, writing: "Heading home with a cold head #Istanbul#HairTransplant."

Lee got married to Any Dream Will Do judge Denise van Outen on 25 April 2009 and their daughter was born on 1 May 2010.

In July 2013, the couple released a joint statement stating that they had separated.
