A South African composer who worked on The Lion King remake has revealed that he has no recollection of having a discussion withMeghan Markle about Nelson Mandela.

Grammy-award winner Lebohang Morake, who is also known professionally as Lebo M, has said that he doesn't “remember details” of a conversation he had with the Duchess of Sussex, following claims she made in a recent interview.

During an interview with US Magazine The Cut, 41 year old Meghan claimed that an unnamed South African castmember of The Lion King had said that her 2018 wedding to Harry led to celebrations in South Africa that could be likened to the atmosphere when Nelson Mandela was freed from jail.

Speaking to the publication, the Duchess of Sussex said: “He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, 'I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison'.”

However, since the interview, Lebohang, 58, has said that while he did speak to Meghan and Harry at the Lion King premiere in London, he does not recall their discussion.

Speaking toMailOnline, he said: “Indeed I was at The Lion King 2019 premiere and met the royals.

“I cannot comment on the matter as it was three years ago and I don’t remember details of that conversation which was less than a minute, except the royals were going to South Africa or Botswana.

“'I’m the only South African directly associated with both The Lion King films and the Broadway productions."

And when asked by the publication if the issues Meghan covered in her recent interview, which has caused much controversy since its release, would have resonated with people in South Africa, Lebohang has said he is doubtful about its impact.

“As a South African, I’m not sure if this is important to most of us facing serious domestic issues. I’d like to not be dragged into this issue from three years ago either way,” he said.

Lebohang isn’t the only person involved with The Lion King to have responded to Meghan’s claims in her interview.

Dr John Kani, who voiced Rafiki in the movie, recently saidthat Meghan has made a “faux pas” in her interview with The Cut.

“I have never met Meghan Markle. This seems like something of a faux pas by her. I have never met the Duchess at all. I am the only South African member of the cast and I did not attend the premiere in London,” he told theMailOnline.

“I went to Hollywood as we opened there and from there I had to go immediately to Paris where I was shooting a film sequel, so I couldn't hang around. The only South African was me playing Rafiki. But I did not go to the opening in Leicester Square as I didn't have the time to do that. It just may be a mis-remembering on her side.”
