Liv Hawkins: ‘There’s drama but no love on Love Island – the couples won’t last’

Former Love Island star and resident show columnist Olivia Hawkins has spilled the tea on all the latest shenanigans from the iconic Spanish villa.

Unsurprisingly, last week was full of drama as two new bombshells made their entrance following the shocking – and brutal – double dumping of Catherine Agbaje and Elom Ahlijah-Wilson, and Leah Taylor and Montel Mackenzie.

The Islanders barely had time to catch their breath following their co-stars' abrupt exits before the arrival of bombshells Josh Brocklebank, 26, a financial advisor, and model Ella Barnes, 23.

After just one day getting to know their new co-stars, the pair were forced to choose someone to couple up with. Josh decided to couple up with Jess Harding, much to Sammy Root's dismay, while Ella caused a headache for OG Ella Thomas after revelations about past interactions with her partner Tyrique Hyde, before ultimately sending Abi Moores into a spin after choosing to couple up with her beau, Mitchel Taylor.

Here's Olivia's take on everything that went down on Love Island this week…

I don't see any of the couples lasting

I don't think one couple will last on the outside. I think this is the first season where I'm just not really invested in the couples. It's been very dramatic and that's great for the viewer, and it keeps us on edge, but in terms of actual couples, I don't really see any going the distance.

Like Alex and Olivia, Molly and Tommy – I don't see that in this season. Maybe Jess and Sammy – I think they could be cute, potentially. I think it really [hit home] that Jess could be gone like that and, when she got chosen by Josh, it made him think, 'you need to get in check because she could leave you if you keep doing these silly games'.

I think she was right sticking with Sammy because she would have gone back to him eventually. I think if she'd have carried on getting to know Josh, it could have sabotaged that. Although Sammy was allowed to get to know as many girls as he wanted – that's guys for you, though – they want their cake and to eat it.

Catherine could've made it to the final

Catherine would have still been in the villa if she'd stayed with Scott, 100% – she would have been in the final. On Aftersun, she was adamant he was going to recouple.

They obviously had some conversations we hadn't seen about still being a bit open – for her to think that, it obviously wasn't portrayed the way maybe it was. The public can only see a certain amount of things, [the producers] can't show everything so it has to be the storyline.

You say things you don't mean during a recoupling because you're just so nervous. Maybe if Catherine and Scott were allowed to speak in that moment, then they could have sorted things. But I think they said things they couldn't really backtrack on.

I really felt for her because obviously she came out to quite a bit of hate and her dumping was very abrupt.

Ella B was was playing Mitch – it was unfair

I knew Mitch would go back to Abi. When a bombshell comes in, we always used to say it's like a shiny new toy – the boys just go crazy for them for a few days.

I don't think Mitch is Ella B's type – she made it clear when she came in that Tyrique and Ouzy were her type, which the original Ella pointed out, but then she fancied Mitch?

I thought she was playing him a little bit, which was quite unfair – she doesn't like him. I think if Tyrique could have given her the time of day, she'd have gone there, 100%.

His comment about it being "a shame" their kiss in the outside world was their "last", I thought, was in a flirty way. I'd have taken it the same way Ella B did.

I just can't see it in a way of being like 'well, shame, that's the last time you can do it'. That's not his character. I think he is a flirty person, so he meant it in a flirty way, but it was just a throwaway comment – I don't think he actually meant anything serious by it.

I think he was just harmlessly flirting, but that seems to be built within him, and maybe that's something Ella T needs to deal with.

Love Island BTS

I think in previous seasons, they used to be able to take their phones up to the bedrooms and they could message and show each other under the bed, but we had to keep our phones downstairs at night.

We used to try and write messages in code under the sheets but obviously it's dark, so you can't really see to have secret messages with your partner. It didn't really work.

They don't miss a trick – you cannot get away with anything, even if you try and mouth something to someone, they will see.

You've just got to imagine, they have a gallery, they call it, and it was just one room of loads of screens and multiple people just watching every single camera. There must be someone on each camera at all points because they don't miss anything.

The work they put into it, it's really incredible. It's so fun, and I think that it's needed – it really is great television. I love it.
