Charlene White, 42, has taken to twitter to comment on the news that Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned after just 45 days in office. The Loose Women panellist said she had received a barrage of messages from friends “all over the world” reacting to the update.

Charlene retweeted a post by her ITV News colleague, political editor Robert Peston, that featured a photo of the former Prime Minister.

The tweet read: “Truss: I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party. The leadership election will last a week.”

Charlene then added in her retweet: “We’re supposed to be one of the leading powers on the international stage… …and yet …here we are. 44 days. Incredible.”

The TV star added in a follow-up tweet: “The way my phone is blowing up with friends all over the world messaging me right now is no joke.

“Most of whom are starting their texts with.. You lot are mad.”

Charlene’s tweet was soon swamped with replies from fans who were outraged by the latest political development.

“We need a general election now, get them out they are done, they are incapable of running our country.”

TribeJefferson added: “Oh well.. that statement is such a myth.. not anymore.. what a joke of a country.. just rotate to the next one..”

TinaTho95772228 penned: “Yes we are leading the laughing stock for the world, sadly.”

Liz Truss was elected as leader of the Conservative Party on September 5 after a contested run-off with former Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Prior to her resignation, the Prime Minister was confronted by the influential backbench MP Sir Graham Brady earlier today, who warned she had no choice but to resign.

Defending her economic plans, Truss said as she resigned: “I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability.

“Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills, Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent, and our country had been held back for too long by low economic growth.

“I was elected by the Conservative Party with a mandate to change this.

“We delivered on energy bills and on cutting national insurance and we set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy – that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer demanded a general election “now” so that the nation can have “a chance at a fresh start”.

Sir Keir said: “The Conservative Party has shown it no longer has a mandate to govern.

“The British public deserve a proper say on the country’s future. They must have the chance to compare the Tories’ chaos with Labour’s plans to sort out their mess, grow the economy for working people and rebuild the country for a fairer, greener future.

“We must have a chance at a fresh start. We need a general election – now.”
