Love Island star Coco Lodge has shared the reality of her experience on the ITV2 dating show, including the moment her dad called the show’s producers after scenes on screen saw her receive an outpouring of hate.
The 27 year old, who hails from Surrey, first entered the villa during Casa Amor and soon turned the head of Andrew Le Page who was coupled up with Tasha Ghouri at the time.
But despite flirting with romance during her time on the show, the experience was far from smooth sailing, with the star repeatedly being attacked on social media for both her appearance and actions while in the villa.
Opening up about the experience with hosts Bobby Norris and Stephen Lang on Thursdays edition of FUBAR Radio Coco even claimed her concerned dad had stepped in to say something when the comments began to escalate, as he feared the damaging impact they could have on her mental health.
She said: "When I was in the villa, apparently my dad called the producers and was like, 'you need to show her full personality because what you're showing is causing so much hate – you're going to ruin my daughter's mental health’.”
ITV has been contacted by OK! for comment.
The bombshell was repeatedly hit with cruel comments from trolls online during her time in the villa, with many focusing on her relationship with Andrew – but several others singled out her appearance too, something she hadn’t expected when leaving the villa.
Discussing the experience on The Murad Merali Podcast, Coco admitted that she hadn’t received as much support as she had expected.
Coco said: “I didn’t actually get a warning before I came out that I was being trolled for my looks. I was given a warning about being trolled for the Andrew and Tasha situation, but no warning about being trolled for my looks which is why it was such a shock!”
The situation was even so overwhelming that it brought the Islander to tears, but very little of this made it into the final edit, in a move that Coco slammed for failing to tell the whole story.
“Some of the things they include in the show for their editing, like me shaving my arms when people are calling me certain words, doesn’t help with the trolling," she explained.
“It hurts, because obviously it’s about your appearance. And how I was perceived on the show was not like my personality at all and they’ve edited me to look a certain way.
“But to get comments about my appearance, it was hurtful. I was obviously cast for a reason. How you look on the cameras or in press photos to begin with is not…they don’t choose the most flattering stuff!"
Coco was voted off the competition last week along with fellow Islander Josh Le Grove after just 12 days in the villa.
