Monty Python’s Michael Palin says ‘I need her’ as he mourns wife of 57 years

Michael Palin has opened up about the heartbreaking loss of his wife Helen Gibbins, saying: “I need my partner.”

The English comedian appeared on an episode of Rob Brydon’s podcast and shared his grief of no longer having her around.

Michael’s wife tragically passed away earlier this year after suffering kidney failure and chronic pain.

When asked about the loss of Helen, Michael said: “We were together for a very long time.

“Married for 57 years and I met her before that. So, you form a kind of unit and you don’t realise that until someone is gone. It’s slightly lop-sided. Like something tips over.

“It’s just me. I need my partner there to sort of keep me on the straight and narrow.”

The pair first met when they were both 16 years old and went on to have three children together and four grandchildren.

Michael added: “In her case, she was very unwell for a few years. She couldn’t do an awful lot for herself.

“Helen was a very independent woman and the idea of someone being dependent on someone else didn’t appeal to her.”

The 80-year-old is one of four surviving members of the British comedy group Monty Python, who are best known for their BBC sketch series and film projects such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Last month, Michael admittedthat he doesn’t keep in contact “very often” with his fellow co-stars from the comedy troupe.

Speaking to Radio Times, Michael discussed that they haven’t stayed in touch apart from when Helen passed away.

“No, we don’t speak to each other very often. There’s no ex-Pythons WhatsApp group or anything,” Michael shared.

“But we are in touch, and their reactions to Helen’s death, from all of them, were very touching, very immediate and very sincere. I really appreciated that.”
