Pink recalls near-death experience weeks before signing first record deal at 16

Fan throws their mother’s ashes on stage at Pink concert

Pink signed her first-ever record deal just a few weeks after having a near-death experience as a teenager.

The So What star has been selling out stadiums across the US as part of her Summer Carnival Tour, although was forced to cancel some dates.

The singer had to axe three dates in a month in Tacoma and Washington due to “family medical issues” and a third in Texas due to a “bad sinus infection”.

As the 44-year-old continues to promote her tour, Pink recently revealed she almost died when she was just 16.

What made the time even more memorable was that the incident took place just weeks prior to her signing her first record deal.

In an interview with 60 Minutes’ Cecilia Vega, Pink explained: “Thanksgiving 1995, I was at a rave and I overdosed.

“I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things and then I was out, done, too much.”

Vega stated: “You almost died”, with Pink simply replying: “Yeah”.

She said how she “got into drugs, I was selling drugs and then I was kicked out of the house”, when she was 16.

“I dropped out of high school. I was off the rails.”

Pink recalled stopping using drugs after the incident and just weeks later, she signed a record deal with LaFace Records as a member of a girl group.

In a bid to change up her image, Pink, whose real name is Alecia Moore, was sent to etiquette classes by the label.

“They wanted me to learn how to wear dresses and use the right fork,” Pink said.

“I went once but it didn’t work.”

Of course, the group didn’t work out with Pink releasing her first solo album Can’t Take Me Home in 2001 which went double platinum.

She previously said about “not winning the popularity contest among her peers”, which the singer touched on again.

The artist explained: “We sold three million tickets in the last six months, but you don’t really hear about it unless you went. Image is everything in this business.”

Pink has been touring for Summer Carnival at the same time as Beyonce’s Renaissance and Taylor Swift’s Eras tours.
