Prue Leith defends woke Bake Off and says show cares about society

Great British Bake Off host Prue Leith has responded to claims that the Channel 4 baking show has become “woke”.

The 83-year-old TV chef revealed how the programme selects its applicants for the upcoming baking competition, saying it’s “not about the colour of their skin or anything”.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: “The process at the beginning is just who’s the best. We want to know what they know about baking and will they be able to stand up to the pressures.

“It’s not about the colour of their skin or anything.”

She continued: “It’s woke in the sense we care about reflecting society. We would not put somebody in the tent who wasn’t capable of winning.”

This year viewers will be introduced to the Great British Bake Off’s first ever deaf contestant.

The show is also welcoming a new co-host, Alison Hammond, who is replacing actor and comedian Matt Lucas.

She will be joining Noel Fielding and Paul Hollywood in the tent as a group of new bakers put their culinary skills to the test.

In other news, Paul Hollywood has reportedly married his girlfriend Melissa Spalding after a four-year romance.

The 57-year-old tied the knot with his fiancee, who is 18 years younger than him, in a beautiful Ayia Athanasia chapel.

Melissa is a pub landlady at the Chequers Inn in Smarden, Ashford, and it is thought that Paul met her near his £1 million Grade II-listed home.

The marriage comes after Paul broke up with his former lover Summer Monteys-Fullam in August 2019.

Before Summer, he was previously married to his ex-wife Alexandra for 20 years.

The pair divorced after he had an affair with his American Baking Competition co-star, Marcela Valladolid.

They first met in 1990 in Cyprus when she was a scuba instructor and they had a son, Josh, in 2001.
