The coronation of King Charles III could see a touching Queen Mother tribute, according to author Gareth Russell.
Scheduled for the first May bank holiday weekend, the monarch's crowning moment continues to dominate the headlines in light of his youngest son Prince Harry's recent controversies, which may hinder their potential reunion at the ceremony.
Appearing on Kinsey Schofield's podcast To Di For Daily, though, Gareth (who authored last year's biography Do Let's Have Another Drink: The Singular Wit and Double Measures of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother) mentioned how the Queen Mother's impact on a young Charles would influence a section of the proceedings.
He noted how she had "respect" for her father-in-law King George V, yet "by him not being a very approachable figure to his children, he had left his sons totally unprepared — in terms of confidence — to be King. She was determined that was not going to happen again.
He said: "So with her grandson King Charles — and her great-grandson Prince William — she did try to counteract it by providing a lot of confidence-building, nurturing and advice."
The historian went on to recall the Queen Mother's role at Queen Elizabeth II's own coronation back in June 1953, while suggesting: "Whether we see conscious nods or not, we know Charles first learned about coronations from the Queen Mother, so I think her spirit will absolutely be there.
"Charles' stamina and accession really are great tributes to the Queen Mother and certainly, this is a man whose favourite homes include the Castle of Mey, his late grandmother’s home, who adores and really respects the legacy of his grandmother.
"That will absolutely be at the core of his future reign and the coronation. I think the best of the Queen Mother’s spirit still lives at the heart of the monarchy."
Interestingly, Charles opted for a diamond ring from his grandmother's collection when proposing to Camilla, Queen Consort 18 years ago.
Shortly after the royal's death, the prince admitted he was "utterly devoted" to the Queen Mother during an emotional speech.
"She was quite simply the most magical grandmother you could possibly have, and I was utterly devoted to her," said Charles.
"Her departure has left an irreplaceable chasm in countless lives but, thank God, we are all the richer for the sheer joy of her presence and everything she stood for. For me, she meant everything and I had dreaded, dreaded this moment along with, I know, countless others. Somehow, I never thought it would come."
