Rod Stewart, 77, and Penny Lancaster, 51, met at a party in 1999 and a romance soon blossomed after she took pictures of him on tour. In 2005, Rod popped the question and Penny discovered she was expecting their first child.

Alastair, now 17, was born in November the same year. Soon, Penny and Rod longed to have another baby.

However, after two years of trying, the couple sought medical help after struggling to conceive naturally.

Eventually, after three rounds of “gruelling” IVF treatment, Penny became pregnant with her second child in 2010.

Unfortunately, her struggles were not over yet and she soon received devastating news that rocked her world.

At the age of just 36, Penny’s sister-in-law Louise was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.

Louise, who is married to Penny’s brother Oliver, had to have an immediate mastectomy after doctors found two tumours and affected lymph nodes.

The shocking news left Penny shaken, particularly after she had lost her friend Maria Falco to the disease in 2005.

Speaking in 2010, Penny opened up about the effect Louise’s diagnosis had on her.

She told The Mirror: “When I found out about Louise I had this feeling like my insides had been stripped out.

“Why Louise? She’s young and healthy and she’s got two children aged seven and three. It seems so scary and unfair.

“I was overwhelmed by this gut-wrenching emptiness. It made me panic and I had to call my doctor and go for a scan as I felt like the baby had gone.”

Thankfully, a scan confirmed that Penny and Rod’s baby was absolutely fine and they welcomed Aiden in February 2011.

Their baby joy was even stronger because of how badly Alastair, then four, wanted a little brother or sister.

The model continued: “Alastair’s pleas of ‘Mummy, I really, really, really want a baby!’ kind of kept me on the track to keep going.

“I did say that I’d stop at 40, that I’d appreciate that I have a blessed life, that we’ve got Alastair and give up the chase.

“But thankfully we were granted with our wish and all is well.”

Rod also has six children from previous relationships.

His first child is Sarah Streeter, 59, and she was born in 1963. He then married Alana Stewart in 1979 and they welcomed Kimberly, 43, and Sean, 42.

The rocker then had a relationship with model Kelly Emberg and they had a daughter, Ruby, 35, born in 1987.

Three-years later, Rod married for the second time. This time to New Zealand-born model Rachel Hunter.

Together they had Renée, 30, and Liam, 28.
