Roman Kemp ‘mortified’ after Royal faux pas with Kate Middleton

He’s usually a smooth talker on Capital’s Breakfast, but DJ Roman Kemp confessed to making a royal blunder when he met Kate Middleton.

Speaking on Loose Women on Thursday, the 29 year old revealed that he accidentally called the Princess of Wales “fit” as he tried to pay her compliment.

He explained: “There was a party in Buckingham Palace, it was an honour to be there. As I was walking across the room, Princess Catherine said, “Oh Roman you look great”…”

Clearly embarrassed, the radio host revealed that in total shock he replied: “Oh you look really fit.”

He added: “I was mortified, I’ve never said that to anyone!”

The incident took place at Buckingham Palace earlier this year, after he co-hosted the Platinum Party at the Palace during the Jubilee.

Reflecting on his time at the palace, he joked that the opulent setting was similar to Watford nightclub Destiny.

Instead of attendees being discretely ushered out, Roman revealed that palace security just flicked on the lights – joking that he was “here for it”.

While Buckingham Palace might not have lived up to his expectations, one thing he can always count on is his mum Shirlie.

In a touching moment on Loose Women, he told panellists that his mum had saved his life at the age of fifteen.

At the time, Roman was experiencing his first major bout of depression and struggled to understand his own emotions.

Thankfully, his mum pushed him to address how he was feeling and even helped Roman seek medical treatment.

Eventually, the radio host was prescribed anti-depressants which he said were the best thing for him at the time.

Chatting on the ITV lunchtime show, he continued: “My mum has always been my saviour, I’ve written my book to say thank you to my mum and to honour my friend who I lost.”

Although Roman’s mental health has improved, the presenter has opened up about his battle with depression, especially after the tragic loss of his best friend Joe Lyons in 2020.

The presenter has also been at the forefront of wellness initiatives such as Britain Get Talking, which urges people to reach out to their loved ones.

Earlier this year, Roman even tackled the difficult topic of male suicide in the hard-hitting BBC documentary, Our Silent Emergency.

Despite joking that he’d become the “poster boy” for men’s mental health, this activism is something Roman takes incredibly seriously and the DJ has even founded a charity, Joe’s Buddy Line, to support young people.
