The six-time NBA All-Star is released from jail without charges having been filed after being arrested by Tacoma police for investigation of a drive-by shooting.
AceShowbiz –Shawn Kemp has regained his freedom. The former NBA player has been formally released from jail after the alleged drive-by shooting and his attorney has issued a statement regarding the matter.
On Thursday, March 9, the former Seattle SuperSonics player’s attorney Tim Leary spoke to AP, “We’re grateful they didn’t rush to judgment.” A separate attorney, W. Scott Boatman, also confirmed that the basketballer’s vehicle was broken into Tuesday night and several items were taken, including an iPhone.
Boatman added that Kemp tracked the phone’s location to an occupied car at the Tacoma Mall and when Kemp confronted the individuals inside, they shot at him, and he returned fire. “There was not a drive by shooting as previously reported and Mr. Kemp’s actions were reasonable and legally justified,” the lawyer said, “Mr. Kemp met with law enforcement at the scene in an attempt to assist in the matter.”
Kemp was released from jail at 1:00 P.M. Pacific Time on Thursday, according to Pierce County booking records. It’s reported that prosecutors have not charged Kemp with a crime while a Tacoma police investigation is pending.
Kemp was taken into the Pierce County Jail on Wednesday at around 6 P.M. In footage surfacing online, the 53-year-old former athlete could be seen firing a gun during an altercation at a parking lot outside a shopping mall in Tacoma. He fired the weapon at around 2 P.M.
Witnesses claimed that they heard multiple gunshots before pulling their phones out to record the incident. The eyewitnesses also said they saw the six-time NBA All-Star driving around the parking lot and ditching his gun in a bush before talking to police.
In other news, 50 Cent showed some support to Kemp following the latter’s arrest. Hours after the former athlete’s arrest, the “In Da Club” rapper turned to Instagram to address everyone who’s had something to say about the story.
According to 50, no one should be judging Reign Man until all the facts come to light. “I don’t know what’s going on here, but don’t judge this brother till all the facts come out. #bransoncognac #lecheminduroi,” so the “Power” co-creator captioned his post.
