Strictlys Giovanni hints Anton Du Beke was only one to step in for him

Giovanni Twists Ankle On Tour With Anton Du Beke

Giovanni Pernice has admitted that Anton du Beke was the “only one” who helped him during his early days on Strictly Come Dancing.

The Italian dancer, who first joined the BBC dance competition in 2015, didn’t know a single word of English and was quickly thrown into the limelight.

Fortunately, one particular professional dancer acted as a handy guide for Giovanni and helped him cope during the live shows.

Speaking to Nick Grimshaw on the Waitrose Eat podcast last year, Giovanni revealed: “We are very very good friends.

“He was the only one when I joined Strictly, he helped me with everything.”

He continued: “I couldn’t speak any English and he’s always been there for me since the beginning. We ended up being like – I don’t want to say father and son – but like brothers, big brother.”

Giovanni also added that he had to learn the English language in a very short space of time.

He added: “I did have a translator for my first season all the way through, because of the interviews and stuff.

“It’s the biggest television show so they were like ‘we can trust you to learn’ so I had to learn English in one week.

“Obviously not the full English but the most important things.”

Giovanni, who has made it to the Strictly final four times, was finally crowned as the winner in 2021 with his partner Rose Ayling-Ellis.

He previously made the Grand Final with Faye Tozer in 2018, Debbie McGee in 2017 and Georgia May Foote in 2015.

Last year he was partnered in a same-sex couple with Richie Anderson, but they were eliminated after three weeks.

For the 2023 series, Giovanni has been paired with Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington.

Strictly Come Dancing resumes on BBC One at 6:30pm.
