The Chase: Krishnan Guru-Murthy chooses high offer
Strictly Come Dancing 2023 contestant Krishnan Guru-Murthy has opened up about his health, after asking his doctor about the risk of “dropping dead live on BBC One”.
The Channel 4 News presenter has revealed that he is unable to train as intensely as some of his fellow contestants for the competitive dance show due to a heart condition.
The 53-year-old newsreader has explained that the health issue will inhibit his ability to train as hard as other celebrities, especially for dances that significantly raise the heart rate.
Krishnan suffers from a genetic heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which tragically led to the death of two of his cousins.
Speaking about his determination to appear on Strictly before he got too old, he told The Mirror: “I even asked my cardiologist if I might drop dead live on BBC1. ‘No’, was his answer. But he couldn’t give me an absolute guarantee.

“I have to be careful of raising my heartbeat into the red zone; that final 15%. I shouldn’t go there. It’s where people with my condition drop dead.”
He went on to reveal that it was his wife Lisa who encouraged him to get out of his comfort zone.
Admitting that people had been asking him to do these kinds of shows for years, he added: “What if I kept saying no? It might not be physically possible for me to do it now, that remains to be seen. But it certainly won’t be possible in five years.”

The British Heart Foundation describes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as “a disease of your heart muscle, where the muscle wall of your heart becomes thickened.”
On the foundation’s website, the description reads: “HCM is a genetic condition caused by a change or mutation in one or more genes and is mostly passed on through families.
“A child of someone with HCM has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting the condition.
“About 1 in 500 of the UK population has the condition. Most people who have it feel few, if any, symptoms and can live a normal life.”
Krishnan will be joined on the dance floor this year by stars including Layton Williams, Nigel Harman, Jody Cundy, Ellie Leach, Nikita Kanda, Angela Rippon and Bobby Brazier.
Les Dennis, Annabel Croft, Amanda Abbington, Adam Thomas, Zara McDermott, Angela Scanlon and Eddie Kadire are all also taking part.
The first live show for Strictly Come Dancing looks set to air on Saturday, September 23 on BBC One.
