Strictly’s Tess Daly opens up on time she ‘didn’t feel safe’ at home

Strictly: Tess Daly stuns in green dress

BBC presenter Tess Daly has exclusively revealed the worst place she has ever lived in.

The Strictly Come Dancing host, 54, who now lives in a lovely pad in Buckinghamshire, once lived worlds away from her current abode.

Tess admitted that she hated living in Barcelona, Spain, recalling in a recent interview that she “felt unsafe” while living in the city.

Before her successful career as a presenter, Tess was a model, which allowed her to travel around the world.

The star revealed she was struggling in her chosen profession and said she was so poor at the time that she had to split a chocolate bar with a mate for a Friday night treat.

In an interview with The Times, she revealed: “I lived in a pension in Barcelona when I’d just started modelling. I was sharing with another model from my agency.”

“We were so poor we would share a Twix on a Friday night. There were ladies of the night downstairs in the doorway conducting their business.”

The Strictly star went on to add that a man would bang on her door late at night and that she felt frightened.

She said: “There was a guy who would run down the corridor shouting and banging on doors at all hours of the night. It didn’t feel safe.”

Despite this, she admitted that she took away a valuable life lesson from the experience.

“I realised very early on that if you want your own Twix you’ll have to pay for it. If you haven’t got much, you work hard to get what you want. I’m grateful that I had that fire in my belly,” she said.

The house she formerly lived in sounds a million miles away from her current home, which is in the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire.

Describing it, she said: “It’s a very pretty 1930s house. Wherever we could we opened it up. I’ve knocked down walls and put glass partitions between rooms in their place to add light, and I’ve put in more windows and skylights. We’re a little bit deprived of light in this country.”

Tess lives with her husband, TV presenter Vernon Kay, 48, and their two daughters, Phoebe, 19, and Amber, 13.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
