William and Kate have to ‘extend hand of friendship’ if Harry attends Coronation, says expert

Prince William and Kate Middleton will have to “extend the hand of friendship” to Prince Harry if he makes an appearance at King Charles’ Coronation, a royal expert has claimed.

It's not yet been confirmed whether Harry and Meghan Markle will be attending the Coronation of King Charles, however it’s thought that they will be among the 2,000 people to receive an invitation to the crowning of the new King in May.

Should the couple accept an invitation to the Coronation, Harry’s appearance at the event will mark his first public event with his family, following the release of his bombshell autobiography Spare.

If Harry does attend the ceremony, it may fall down to his brother William and wife Kate to be accommodating to him, according to royal expert Camilla Tominey, as his father King Charles will be too busy with the event.

"I think it will probably be beholden on the Prince and Princess of Wales to extend some sort of hand of friendship, which is going to be difficult, but it's the King's big weekend,” she said.

Speaking on video for The Telegraph, she continued: “He is going to be otherwise engaged in matters involving gold state coaches and crowns, his wife is also being crowned.

"Therefore, it is kind of left to William and Kate to kind of look as accommodating as they did when they did that joint walkabout after the Queen's death in September…. so we might see something else like that."

Harry and Meghan made their last public appearance with William and Kate following the Queen’s death last September, where the two couples put aside their differences to meet well-wishers in a walkabout outside Windsor Castle.

Despite previously having a close relationship, Harry and William's bond has been strained in recent years following the Duke of Sussex’s move to America in 2020.

Their brotherly bond was tested further when Harry released his autobiography Spare last month, in which the Prince makes a number of claims about his family.

In the book, Harry went into detail about his fraught relationship with his brother, even claiming that the Prince of Wales physically attacked him, breaking his necklace and injuring his back on a broken dog bowl as he fell to the floor.

He also discussed the moment that William met Harry's now-wife Meghan, painting his brother as cold and saying William "recoiled" when California-native Meghan hugged him.

Amongst his claims of his father, Harry alleged Charles jokingly referred to him as the “spare” moments after he was born.

He wrote how Charles, the then-Prince of Wales, allegedly told his mother Princess Diana on the day of his birth: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare. My work is done.”
