Zara McDermott defends Kate Middleton collab – ‘you don’t have to be qualified’

Love Island's Zara McDermott has defended herself after she announced she would be collaborating with Kate Middleton on theroyal’s new campaign.

Zara had initially told how she was “honoured” to be working with the Princess of Wales, 41, on the Shaping Us campaign – which aims to highlight the importance of early years development.

In response a fan on Insta asked how, as someone who has spoken about potentially not having children, Zara was qualified to take on the role.

They wrote: "Can I ask how you’re qualified to do this? Only because you’ve said yourself you don’t even know if you want kids so I’m guessing not maternal so why are you working with this sort of campaign?! Just intrigued."

Zara, 26, explained: "I am simply a campaign ambassador, our job is to get the key messaging out there and be involved in the outreach projects! we have so many experts on the Team that are on hand to help us answer any questions and also to attend these outreach projects with us too! You don’t have to be qualified in order to be passionate & bring awareness to a cause!"

The discussion came after the media personality, who featured on the fourth series of Love Island and went on to appear onThe X Factor: Celebrity andMade in Chelsea, posted an image to her 1.7 million Instagram followers showing her deep in conversation with Princess Kate.

Her caption read: “I am absolutely honoured to be working with the Princess Of Wales on her new campaign, Shaping Us.

“Studies have shown that so many of us don’t fully understand the magnitude of the first 0-5 years of a child’s life and how crucial these years are to forming who we become as adults. Since working on this campaign and listening to the science, I have realised the staggering link between mental health in adulthood, and childhood development. I always knew it was a factor, but I never realised how much.”

She added: “I am continuing to work with the Princess long term to discuss how we can ensure this campaign can make real change and I’m excited to hopefully see our ideas come to life.”

Zara’s showbiz pals responded to the post – heaping praise on her.

Her boyfriendSam Thompson, the radio host and Made in Chelsea star, wrote: “I’m so proud of you goose,” followed by three heart emojis.

Zoe Hague, the Instagram influencer and sister of former Love Island contestant Molly-Mae Hague, replied: “Amazing Zara, that's incredible!”

Influencer and former Made in Chelsea starJosh 'JP' Patterson said: “Class Zara.”

Chloe Burrows, the Love Island series seven contestant, meanwhile simply posted a string of applause emojis.
