I didn't want bleach to ruin my hair – so I used a cheap kitchen ingredient instead and it worked even better | The Sun

THANKS to three lockdowns and a cost of living crisis, more people are attempting to do their own beauty fixes at home.

So it’s no surprise that TikTok users went crazy for one content creator’s cheap hair-lightening hack.

@kokothemoon suggested people could save on buying bleach and use bicarbonate of soda to lighten their hair instead.

In her latest video, the bargain hunter can be seen wearing foils as she explains that she’s trying to go from black to ashy blonde.

“So I ran out of bleach and I saw on the internet that I could use bicarbonate [of] soda and, like, developer, and I’ve got probably five sessions of black box dye on my hair.

“Now I know I could just get bleach – but it’s me being kooky sometimes. So we’ll see the results.

“Now my hair isn’t actually that long, those are hair extensions, but that’s how dark my hair [is].

“And that’s how short my hair actually is.

“This is the vibe I’m trying to go for. Like this dusty, rooty kind of blonde thing. So when I grow my hair out, it’s kind of like an ombre effect, but not.

“So now I have to wash this out. I know it’s not going to be the same as that in one session. We’re just going to have fingers crossed."

“I knew that this wasn’t going to do one round or anything like that. I’ve had loads of box dye on my hair.

“But the fact that it’s lifted it like, I’d say three or four levels. That is nuts.

“The next thing I’m going to need to do is put another round at the ends again, which would lift it another few levels.

“But this process is probably going to take, roughly, about a week or two. Nice gradual process.

“I’m just impressed that it lifted this much, to be honest with you.

“And then when it’s come to the lightness that I want because brassiness isn’t like a hot look, it will be a toner with an ash tone.

“Might put some little streaks coming through, so when my hair grows out, it will have some texture.

“But yeah, baking soda and hair developer, volume 30.”

Experts have warned that there are some risks with this method, including dryness, hair breakage, and scalp irritation, and encourage users to limit the amount of product and time they leave it on.

But fans couldn’t believe the results, with one writing: “Amazing tip!”
