I don’t wash my hair for weeks & don’t care what people think – it saves so much time and money | The Sun

HOW often should you wash your hair? It's the age-old debate that no one can ever agree on.

Of course, how often you need to shampoo and condition does vary depending on your lifestyle and hair type, but there are some women who swear by going weeks without washing their hair.

Business owner Joanne Colley, 42, lives with her husband and two children in east London, and washes her hair on average once every seven to ten days – sometimes even leaving it for two weeks.

She says her hair's in great condition – and she saves time and money in the process.

Jo says: "My hair is currently shoulder length, and hairdressers are forever telling me it's very thick and I have lots of it.

"I'm definitely happy with my hair – it's very versatile, I can twist it up into different styles and I don't feel l have to do much to it to make it look good – which is lucky as I'm rubbish with blow drying!"

While Jo likes to look good she has always been low-maintenance, but says as the years have progressed the frequency with which she washes her hair has decreased.

She says: "I'm a very straightforward basic shampoo and conditioner kind of person – the quicker the better.

"However I would say I have a style with my hair that looks good and suits me.

"I sort of twist the fringe up into a quiff and whether it's down or tied up it looks passable without needing loads of products."

Unlike many of us, Jo has never really felt any pressure to wash her hair more regularly.

She says: "I've never been too obsessed with appearance, and at one point I lived in the jungle for three months and had to wash in a stream… so it definitely wasn't washed regularly during that time!

"From my thirties since I had children though I think I've definitely washed it less, as I had even less time and was just too tired.

"I also now try to use the least amount of chemicals I can, so reducing shampooing and conditioning definitely helps with this too."

Jo admits she does start to notice when it needs to be washed, saying: "If I go longer than a week, I definitely start to feel that it needs a wash.

How often should I wash my hair?

  • Generally, most experts suggest washing your hair every two to three days – however this will of course vary depending on your hair type.
  • If you have long locks, you're likely to need less washing, as the oil will take longer to reach the ends.
  • Dyed hair is likely to be drier and therefore should need less washing as well.
  • Curly hair requires some special considerations since it's so prone to dryness.
  • Experts recommend washing your hair no more than every other day, and as little as once per week if your hair is particularly dry.

However washing less saves so much time, there are less chemical products being used, and it also saves money – there are so many positives.

"It's also just one less thing to have to think about too, and I've gone for maybe two weeks before, although I don't really keep track as I don't have a set hair wash day."

While Jo is aware some people might turn their nose up at her decision to dodge regular hair-washing, she's thankfully never had any negativity.

Jo says: "I don't think people are shocked when they find out, although perhaps they are and they aren't telling me!

"I don't really care if they did to be honest."

It's also something Jo would encourage more people to try out.

She says: "I do think the more you wash and brush your hair, the more it needs to be washed.

"I definitely think as I have such thick hair and so much of it, this definitely helps reduce the need for washing.

"I think it depends on your hair type, but I also believe you can train your hair to require less washing by reducing the frequency that you wash it.

"Admittedly you do have to go through the icky stage first, but I'd always say if people want to wash it less, definitely give it a go!"
