THE dreaded arrival of winter is almost here which means only one thing – swapping the cosy cardigans for thick coats to keep you toasty.
But if you're yet to hit the high-street to replenish your wardrobe, be warned – there are some coats that, according to an expert, will only add ten years to your appearance.
Chi Li, who to her fans is better known as Petite Dressing on YouTube, took to social media to list some of the biggest winter attire fashion faux pas – and what to opt for instead.
Bold plaids
Although plaids are making a comeback and have since become a staple for many fashionistas, Chi emphasised you have to know how to wear it properly.
''If you don't style it right, they are also very easy to make you look older.''
She added that coats with this print that are long are especially ''hard to look good on anybody'' because it's both overwhelming and complicated.

Instead, if plaid print is a must, look for something more subtle and also pay attention to what you're wearing underneath – opt for something ''youthful'', such as high-waisted denim trousers and trendy sock boots.
Sweater jacket
As comfortable and easy to thrown on as they are, sweater jackets, the guru explained, are not the most flattering.
Because they're typically thigh-length, it cuts your body into two and doesn't look good on anyone no matter their height.
However, there is a simple way to make it work – wear something shorter underneath, such as a skirt or skort.

Velvet jacket
''It kind of makes it hard to work with your every day outfit,'' Chi said, describing the velvet jacket as something you should only wear around the festive period.
The biggest mistake fashion lovers make when styling this jacket is pairing it with a formal attire – smart trousers and a white button-up.
Instead, she suggested, go for faux leather bottoms and a turtleneck – this combination of materials will make the outfit more interesting.
Shacket
They may be some of the hottest trends around the colder season, but wearing shackets – the hybrid of a jacket and a shirt – is an easy way to add ten years to your look.
As they're usually shapeless and lack any structure, they will make anyone look bigger, no matter their size.
Fortunately, there is a way to make it work – wearing it open, which brings the attention to the layers underneath and your waistline.

Robe coats
According to Chi, there are two main issues with this type of coat.
Firstly, for the most part, they're made of faux fur, making you appear larger, and secondly, despite any efforts to style it, it will just look like a giant robe.
