A FOOD pro has shared five food and drink items that people shouldn’t have if they’re trying to lose weight.

And there’s plenty of popular items included on the banned list, including some popcorn.


Jim – who describes himself as a health pro, advised his followers that they should look carefully at what they’re putting into their body, and the ingredients of each.

And while the social media user, who can be found on TikTok at @healthprorecommends, included plenty of things that are common sense, there were also a few surprise entrants.

“Five foods you should never eat if you want to lose weight,” Jim introduced, before launching into the list.

Some popcorn, although not in the UK or EU, rank high on theglycemic index.

He explained: “Popcorn – popcorn may be considered a very healthy snack to some, but the truth is 95% of corn is GMO and popcorn ranks very high on the glycemic index.

“This means it will push your blood sugar and insulin levels very high.”

Next, he singled out something found in every supermarket you go into, and one which is often counted towards one of your five a day. 

He explained: “Fruit juice seems like a healthy drink any time of the day, but the truth is common supermarket fruit juice is like drinking a glass of sugary poison.

“All fibre is removed from the juice – check the label.”

The third item included was burgers – but particularly if you eat them in a specific way.

Jim said: “Burgers in a bun. The combination of carbs and protein together spikes insulin and blood sugar levels through the roof.”

The last two were more self-explanatory, as he appealed to those with a sweet tooth to curb their habits. 

Jim went on to say: “Ice cream is incredibly high in sugar and will therefore spike your sugar and insulin levels .

“When you spike your insulin to crazy levels like this, it’s literally impossible to lose weight.

Similarly, he had bad things to say about cookies and other moreish biscuits. 

Jim concluded to his 178.5k followers: “Cookies are unfortunately terrible for weight loss and your health.”

This comes after other experts also discussed whether popcorn is a healthy snack to get behind or not. 

One dietician recently told Shape that, understandably, some popcorn is more favourable than others. 

Charmaine Jones – a registered nutritionist – told the publication that the best way to consume popcorn is to make it yourself at home, so you can control what goes into it.

But she also noted: “There’s no reason to restrict occasional treats.”

In response, a spokesman for the UK Snack Nuts and Crisp Manufacturers’ Association (SNACMA) pointed out that “There has never been, nor is there currently, any Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) popcorn or popcorn seed for sale in the USA, Europe or EU. Further, SNACMA is not aware of any GMO popcorn or popcorn seed available for sale in international markets”.

SNACMA also stated that standard popcorn has a GI rating of 55, which is equivalent to a low (55 or less) GI.  Addition of certain flavours or ingredients may affect the overall GI rating (e.g., oils and fats will lower the GI, whilst addition of sugars would likely result in an increase in the GI).
