I’m a skincare fan – the £3.50 travel item you need to bring on the plane – it’s even anti-ageing | The Sun

A SKINCARE fan has revealed the one item everyone travelling 33,000 feet above the ground should bring.

Fiona, a travel and lifestyle influencer from New York City, took to her social media page to share the simple buy she keeps in her carry-on luggage.

Sitting next to the window on a plane overlooking the blue sea and mountains in the distance, she told viewers: “My jaw dropped when I learned this and I know yours will too.”

She then shared a clip of herself boarding the flight while holding up the peace hand sign in the air.

“One thing, I will never ever do again is go on a flight without wearing sunscreen and here are three reasons why,” she continued.

Showing the specific brand she uses, viewers could see she brought along an SPF 30 sunscreen by Supergoop!

While the brand she brought along might cost £34 , there are much more affordable alternatives, including the £3.50 Simple SPF 30.

She continued: “Even though you’re inside the aircraft, because of the high altitude, you’re actually experiencing stronger UV radiation.

“Especially if you’re in the window seat, you are directly exposing yourself, which can lead to skin damage, skin cancer or premature ageing.”

TikTok user @findingfiona went on to claim that she read a study that showed 60 minutes on the window seat “equals 20 minutes on a tanning bed”.

“So just imagine what happens on longer flights,” she added as the video came to an end.

People who watched Fiona’s TikTok video immediately flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts as one person wrote: “I sat next to the window on a 10 hour flight,” followed by a shocked emoji.

Another said: “Omg I always sit on window seat, this rlly helps”.

While a third added: “Yikes I’m on a 4 hour flight every year and I’ve never worn sunscreen on the plane”.

And others said people should simply “close the window” to avoid being exposed to the UV light.

The study Fiona spoke of is titled ‘The Risk of Melanoma in Pilots and Cabin Crew’, by Martina Sanlorenzo, Igor Vujic and Christian Posch, and measured UV in flying planes.

Jeanine Downie, MD, a dermatologist in New Jersey, also backed it up during an interview with newbeauty.com.

“Studies from the Skin Cancer Foundation have shown that as you ascend upwards into the air on a plane you are actually getting exposed to more light and a more intense amount of sunlight,” Dr. Downie shared.

“Which is why pilots and flight attendants comparatively have higher skin cancer numbers than the general population.”

While you might be more protected than a pilot or flight crew, the UVA radiation can still cause skin damage.
