A MARRIED couple has opened up about the abuse they’ve endured since they got together – all because they are different sizes. 

Dalreece and her husband Jarreth met on Tinder and walked down the aisle after two years together. But despite being head over heels in love, they continuously have to defend their relationship to the world.

As part of Truly’s Love Don’t Judge series, Dalreece and Jarreth, who live outside of Cape Town in South Africa, sat down to discuss their romance and how they rise above their critics. 

Dalreece, who is bigger than her husband and says she is proud to be in a mixed weight marriage, explained: “I think that in society there’s just a norm and stereotype that people of the same weight are supposed to be in a relationship.”

She then went on to recall messages the couple has received over the years from social media trolls, including constant questions like “why is your husband so thin and you’re so fat?”

As the cameras capture their life at home together, Jarreth also shared how he has faced similar scrutiny from those who don’t know them.

He explained: “All assumptions people might have is that I have a fat fetish or that I am a chubby chaser.” 

Jarreth continued: “I see Dalreece as a person and not as a fat person.” 

Sadly, the pair has also faced similar uncomfortable scenarios when they go out together.

Jarreth recalled: “A lot of the time, I do hear people commenting on the sly or saying something about Dalreece with me, or in public. 

“I internalise it. I just tend to get upset and then I would want us to leave because it becomes upsetting.

Yet, over time and with the support of one another, Dalreece and her hubby have learnt to ignore the cruel comments.

In fact, Dalreece now credits her man with boosting her confidence and making her feel even more comfortable in her own skin.

She revealed: “I have been fat shamed on Instagram. There’s a lot of stigma with being overweight. 

“I was always self-conscious and didn’t want to post full-body pictures and things like that, but after we met, I became a lot less self-conscious.”

Jarreth added: “Dalreece was not into taking photos, especially anything full frame or below the chest area. 

“I always had to get her good size, but, as time went on, she started to open up and become more comfortable with her own body.

Since her change of heart, Dalreece has built up an online following and wants to show others in a similar position to her that they can ignore their critics too.

Dalreece continued: “On Instagram I’ve had really good responses. I’m not really doing it to be inspiring, I’m just sharing my own story. There is a very big plus-sized movement at the moment and I’m all for it.”

Now, the couple is standing strong and said they want to concentrate on them and them only. 

Jarreth concluded: “Society’s thinking is just skewed, it’s not all about aesthetics, it’s what’s inside that matters.
