Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton both experimented with bold, colour-blocked looks, four years apart. Who wore it first and how did they accessorise?
Kate Middleton stepped out at the late Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday luncheon in a show stopping number.
She opted for a pale blue dress with a wide sorbet coloured stripe across the waist area.
It also boasted another thin stripe down the side of the dress reaching the bottom of the skirt, in blush.
The dress was from Roksanda, a brand which champions an “unmistakable woman-centred design aesthetic”, according to the official website.

“Today, stand out colour blocking, architectural shapes, modern, distinctive cuts, innovative use of fabrics and a dedicated focus on craftsmanship define Roksanda’s signature ready-to-wear and accessories.”
Kate’s dress was wool crepe and fell just above the knee, with quarter-length sleeves and a round neck.
It also appeared to have a chic zip fastening, at the back of the dress, going all the way from the neck to the hem.
The Princess appeared to accessorise with her L.K. Bennett Fern Pumps in nude, and her leather Nina Clutch by the same designer.
Jewellery wise, Kate let her dress do the talking with more minimal pieces on this occasion.
This included her Mappin & Web Empress Diamond Earrings in White Gold, retailed at £1,750.
Always chic and put together, the then-Duchess paired this with the matching Mappin & Web Empress Diamond necklace, priced at £2,250.
But while Kate did look incredibly fashionable and current in this bold colour-block trend, she was not the first prominent royal to experiment with the look.
Four years prior, in 2012, Meghan Markle – before her royal days – wore a colour-block look to the TV Guide Magazine Hot List Party at SkyBar.
She stepped out at the LA event in a vibrant colour-block dress from BCBG Max Azria, although it was very different to Kate’s later ensemble.
It did include a small panel of pink at the bottom of the skirt, however the rest of the colours were black, royal blue, white and grey.
Perhaps the greatest difference between the dresses was that Meghan’s was strapless, but both gowns were around the same length.
As for accessories the then-actress opted for a petite black clutch and black pointed-toe stilettos.
She also went for black nails and a statement silver bangle, but decided to go bare-necked.
Hair wise, Kate opted for sweet half-up-half-down ‘do, whereas Meghan went for loose waves.
Both wore a touch of pink lipstick and a sweep of blush across the cheeks, although Meghan went for a darker smokey eye than Princess Kate.
