Duchess of Cambridge arrives with George and Charlotte
Kate Middleton, 41, arrived at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on May 19, 2018, wearing an Alexander McQueen pleated open-neck coat in pale yellow.
At first sight, the coat appeared to either be white or cream in the bright May sunshine.
But in the official wedding photographs from inside Windsor Castle, the Princess of Wales’s coat was clearly yellow.
The Princess’s coat was custom-made and altered for the occasion, as she had the pockets removed and the skirt made more streamlined rather than the original flared skirt.
Kate also reportedly dyed the coat dress from the original ivory to a primrose yellow colour.
The Princess does own the original ivory version of the coat dress, which she wore in 2015 for her daughter Princess Charlotte’s christening.
It is likely the Princess did not want to wear the ivory version of this coat to Meghan’s nuptials because that would be a huge faux pas at someone else’s wedding.
As for how much the coat dress cost, Alexander McQueen put a price tag of $2,975, or roughly £2,396 on it, at the time.

The original description of the coat dress said: “The wool-silk pleated open neck coat features signature McQueen styling with a wing collar, peaked shoulders and a fit-and-flare silhouette.”
Kate’s version, however, had no pleats and pockets and she also had it modified with full-length sleeves.
As with many of her bespoke pieces, Kate re-wore the ivory coat dress in 2022 for the Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.
She has not yet re-worn the yellow version of the coat dress that she debuted at Meghan’s wedding.
In addition to the ivory and yellow version, Kate also owns a pale blue version of the coat, which she wore one month after the royal wedding in 2018.
The Princess wore this coat to watch a flypast to mark the centenary of the Royal Air Force from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
Once again, Kate had removed the pockets and made the bottom more streamlined, just like she’d done with the primrose yellow version.
It is also likely that the Princess had the ivory version of this coat custom-made in a light blue, as there was no blue version available on the Alexander McQueen website at the time.
