South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa will be welcomed to Buckingham Palace later this month for the first state visit of King Charles’ reign. Royal watchers can expect members of the Royal Family to support the King, and his Queen Consort Camilla is expected to wear a tiara for the occasion.
As Camilla has a new royal role, she may opt to wear a new diadem for the state visit this month.
But Camilla could also opt for an old favourite she’s worn on countless occasions in the past, the Greville Tiara.
The Greville Tiara first entered the royal collection in the early 20th Century, and it is now one of the best-known royal diadems.
Socialite Dame Margaret Greville left the Greville Tiara and a horde of other jewels to the Queen Mother upon her death in 1942.
The Greville Tiara has an iconic honeycomb pattern and it was crafted by jeweller Boucheron.
After the tiara entered the Queen Mother’s possession she was thought to have asked Cartier to update it to a bigger style.
Diamond clusters were added on top to give the diadem a more imposing height, while a grand marquise diamond adorned the centre.
The Queen Mother adored the Greville Tiara and often wore it to important state occasions and royal engagements.

Other Greville jewels left to the Royal Family included the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, a stunning diadem with a huge central cabochon emerald.
This diadem had its most notable outing at Princess Eugenie’s wedding in 2018.
A ruby necklace and another necklace that reportedly belonged to the French Queen Marie Antoinette were also part of the collection bequeathed to the Queen Mother.
As her most-worn diadem, the Greville Tiara could arguably be described as Camilla’s favourite, but she’s worn some other grand tiaras over the years.
For her first tiara outing as a royal in 2005, Camilla opted for a tall, elaborate tiara from the royal collection.
The Delhi Durbar Tiara features an intricate pattern of diamonds and it was crafted for the late Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary.
Mary wore it to the Delhi Durbar in 1911, the celebration of her and King George V’s coronation in India.
According to the Court Jeweller, King George V was a huge fan of the diadem and he dubbed it Mary’s “best tiara”.
Camilla has also worn her family diadem, the Cubitt-Shand Tiara, which she wore to her first wedding to Andrew Parker Bowles in the 1970s.
The Cubitt-Shand Tiara belonged to Camilla’s grandmother Sonia Keppel, the daughter of King Edward VII’s mistress Alice Keppel.
While most members of the Royal Family borrow diadems from the royal collection for engagements, other royals have opted to wear their family diadems.
The late Princess Diana wore her family’s Spencer Tiara to her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles and she continued to wear it during her time as a working royal.
