Kate Middleton style: Tips for dressing like the Duchess

Autumn has officially begun and Kate Middleton – like the rest of us – will be sorting out her wardrobe for this season. Megan Watkins, head stylist at SilkFred, shared the Princess of Wales’ five favourite garments.

Coat dresses

Kate has become synonymous with coat dresses over the years, even spotted wearing one at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this year.

At Trooping the Colour, Kate opted for a crisp, white Alexander McQueen coat dress and to Platinum Party at the Palace, a thicker one from Self Portrait.

As the Royal Family gathered at the Queen’s funeral, Kate opted for a black version of the McQueen dress.

Megan stated: “A coat dress is an easy way to stay stylish and warm.

“For the Queen’s funeral, Kate wore a black version of the style, complete with a cinched waist, double-breasted buttons and a subtle v-neckline. “This style is perfect to pair with a statement necklace and classic court shoes.”

Tonal pieces

Tonal dressing is about dressing from top to toe in one single colour, or varying shades of the same colour.

According to Megan, tonal dressing is Kate’s “signature look”, and she is often spotted wearing a matching jacket and blouse, or matching jacket and trousers. This makes an outfit look well thought out and polished.

When Kate visited Clitheroe Community Hospital in Lancashire, she opted for a camel coat and light brown roll-neck that looked like they were made for each other.

The expert concluded: “Luckily, tonal dressing is really easy to emulate. “However, always make sure your two items are not clashing as this can often make your look disjointed.

Neutral blazer

Kate is partial to a simple, fitted blazer as these can be worn and worn again – with an array of different looks.

The royal has been pictured wearing a blazer with skirts, smart trousers and even jeans.

Just last month, Kate attended the England v India Women’s hockey, pairing a fitted white blazer with matching cigarette trousers and a blouse.

For those who want to emulate this look, Megan suggested: “Perfect for layering, style your blazer with cigarette trousers and this season’s on-trend shoe – a classic ballet pump.

“Opt for a tailored fit and a neutral colour for that ‘royal-appointment’ look.”

Striped jumpers

The Princess is known for her spectacular, high-fashion looks, but the royal is also great when it comes to casual chic.

In July of this year, Kate visited the Trust and the Great Britain Sail GP Team in Plymouth and went for a nautical-themed white and navy striped sweater.

Meghan explained that a striped jumper is a “timeless” piece and “should be a staple in every autumn/winter wardrobe”.

The two-tone shoe

Despite being respectful and appropriate, Kate still manages to keep it fun when it comes to fashion.

At the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final, the Princess stepped out wearing a polka dot navy and white dress.

She paired these with blue and white pumps, where the toes of the shoe were navy and the rest sparkling white.

Megan suggested that ombre or two-toned shoes should be the statement part of an outfit, so rather than pair them with something vibrant and outlandish, a “neutral” colour will work better.
