COLOURFUL tinsel Christmas trees used to be all the rage in the '90s – and looks like they're here to make a comeback decades later.
After years of going wild over the minimalist approach, with many embracing the so-called ''sad beige'' aesthetic, the fun and cheerful tinsel is back – and even interior designers are loving the current trend.
The shiny plastic strings, which many of us grew up with, were first used in Germany in the early 1600s, when the silver material was draped to catch the flickering lights of the real candles, Better Homes and Gardens reported.
Although some may think of the aesthetic as 'tacky', it was actually a sign of prosperity, as the decoration was made of real silver.
The trend then came back around in the '50s and ‘60s, however it was now more affordable, as the popular festive staple was made ofPVC plastic.
After that, the tinsel made a brief resurgence around the '80s and '90sbut it looks like the decoration is now back – and this time, in full force.
One person who couldn't be any happier with the comeback is interior pro Julia Arcery – she even shared a tutorial for fellow Christmas fanatics on how to make the perfect tinsel festive tree.
According to the whizz, who posts under the username @arceriinteriors, you should first start by cutting off the thicker strip on top and then create smaller sections os tinsel – they should ''look like long false lashes'', she explained in the video.
''Take a section and opull it through the branches of the tree, so it's nestled securely, and repeat.''
The final result, the home guru proudly shared on the platform, was a stunning Christmas tree that looked like it had been covered in hundreds of thin icicles.

''It was my first time doing a tinsel tree, so I scoured the internet and found this method- it works pretty flawlessly!''
But whilst the shiny makeover may have been a hit amongst some, not everyone was happy with the tinsel returning to the stores.
One, for instance, demanded Chrismtas super fans chucked the decoration away.
''Bin immediately.''
''It looks like spiderwebs,'' penned another, whilst someone else compared it to ''hair extensions'' and even ''vomit''.
''Sorry no, you can barely see the tree or the other decorations,'' chimed in a fourth who thought she had gone overboard with the tinsel strings.
''My cat would have a field day,'' a TikTok user added.
But for some, the once-popular decoration also brought back feelings of nostalgia, with one person writing: ''My mom used to do this omg it was a whole process, miss her.''
