THERE'S nothing worse than going to add some milk to your tea and realising that it's gone off.

Well luckily there’s one weird hack that can actually help extend the life of your milk – adding salt to it.

Yes, you read that right, you should be adding salt to your milk if you want it to last longer than usual.

This strange food hack comes from Moneyboat.co.uk, who found a number of tips and tricks to make food last longer.

Currently the average UK household throws away £800’s worth of food each year, about £66 a month.

Using tips like adding salt to your milk can not just extend the shelf life, but will also help reduce the amount of food and drinks going to waste in your home.

Depending on the type of milk you use, once opened it can last anywhere from four to ten days if kept in the fridge.

But if left any longer it may begin to sour, however this can be prevented by simply adding a pinch of salt immediately after opening.

This strange tip works thanks to salt’s preservative nature, which means that it will detect bacteria from growing.

If following this trick you should make sure to give the carton a good shake and place it into the fridge as soon as possible.
