Eilish McGuinness, chief executive of the fund, said: “I’m delighted that we are providing such significant support to projects which recognise the vital role of rivers and lakes as the lifeblood and heartland of communities.

“These projects, as well as a raft of others focused on our woodlands, parks and gardens, will help to ensure our natural heritage is preserved and enhanced for the benefit of all, thanks to National Lottery players.”

The river Sherbourne, in Coventry, will benefit from a grant of more than £2million to “reawaken the river, create new wetlands and change people’s relationship with it”.

A lake in Stover Country Park, in Newton Abbot, Devon, has had just under £2.5million of the £15.6million funding.

The project will remove silt from the lake and reopen a portion of a second lake which was once a major feature of the landscape.

Councillor Andrea Davis, of Devon County Council, said: “This is fantastic news for Stover Country Park and a credit to everyone who has worked so hard to secure this funding over a number of years.”

Nature projects in the South Downs National Park, and others in Cumbria and Fife have also received funding.

The Daily Express’s Green Britain Needs You campaign has called for more awareness on environmental issues.
