‘Absolutely huge’ rat spotted scampering through hospital ward

A rat was spotted running across a patient's bedroom at a mental health ward in Northern Ireland in sickening footage.

The rodent was seen running under a chair as it tries to evade detection at the Grangewood Hospital in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Western Health and Social Care Trust, which manages the hospital, confirmed they are aware of the video and are implementing steps to rectify the issue.

The footage shows a man walking towards the chair revealing a rat standing next to it.

The rat scurries away as he is heard saying: “A wee f***ing rat look at it.”

The rat then appears again on the other side of the chair before it runs behind it out of shot.

The hospital today said they are working with pest control to manage the situation.

A spokeswoman for the Western Health and Social Care Trust said: “The Trust can confirm there was a sighting of a pest within Grangewood Hospital yesterday evening. No patient, client or member of staff came to any harm.

“The Trust works with a Pest Control Specialist on any such problems, and takes all the necessary action required to eradicate them.

"The Trust will continue to closely monitor this area to ensure the matter is satisfactorily resolved.”

Grangewood Hospital is a mental health unit which provides specialist care for inpatients at their modern patient centred facility which provides 30 single en-suite bedrooms.

The clip was shared to Cop/vosa watch Derry Facebook page last night, captioned: “Rats in rooms in Grangewood Hospital, Derry.”

The clip has been viewed over 43,000 times and has horrified many people in the comments.

One wrote: “Surely this should be shared with environmental health and other residential areas in and around Gransha.”
