Britons on social media are sharing the hilarious things they think would ‘send Americans into a coma’, ranging from free healthcare and EastEnders to supermarket meal deals.

The TikTok trend sees UK-dwellers remarking on what they think may surprise our neighbours across the pond – and the answers are leaving viewers in stitches.

British pub culture and the NHS were both frequently highlighted, but there were also more niche responses, such as the holiday company Pontin’s and ‘Charing Cross McDonald’s at 2am on a weekend’.

The UK’s drinking culture was a common point brought up by multiple TikTokers.

‘They start drinking when they’re 21, we start drinking when we’re 21 months,’ one said in her video, as she explained that pub crawls may be too much for Americans to handle.

Elsewhere, another commenter touched on the versatility with which Brits visit their favourite drinking haunts, believing that people in the US would be baffled by it.

‘You can go to the pub after work for two pints in your messy work gear,’ she explained. ‘Or you will go on a weekend, dressed up.’

In one TikTok, @stephiealyssa (pictured left and right) did a parenting edition, specifically focusing on motherhood in the UK

‘In summer we have something called beer gardens,’ she added, expanding on the drinking experience in the UK.

In another clip, she remarked that British teenagers also tend to start sampling booze quite young, and – depending on their family – could start having alcohol ‘from like 13’, enjoying beverages while out with friends in a field.

The NHS was also hailed by many, with social media users believing that Americans – where universal healthcare is not offered – would find the concept incredible.

In one TikTok, Stephie did a parenting edition, specifically focusing on motherhood in the UK, and mentioned that she wasn’t charged for being in labour – and was even offered tea and toast right after giving birth.

Meanwhile, in another video, TikToker Jessica also mentioned that our transatlantic neighbours may be baffled to hear about clapping for the NHS, in a tradition that took off during the pandemic.

One focused on London specifically, citing the distinct beep jingle which goes off when someone’s Oyster card is rejected on public transport, as well as dramatic bus announcements such as: ‘This bus is under attack, please dial 999.’

Other instances listed by influencers were a lack of tipping culture with hospitality staff, the prevalence of meal deals, Calpol, Newcastle, gun laws (that ‘we have them’) and GP receptionists, who are often branded as rude and hostile.

On another video, one user pointed out that ‘the Oyster card thing would scare and confuse even me ngl’, as another said they’re ‘still freaked by the knowledge that Americans don’t have kettles & don’t put butter on their sandwiches’.
